Player Outlook
The Red Sox acquired Vaughn Grissom in the Chris Sale trade with the expectation that Grissom would be the Opening Day second baseman in 2024. However, it could end up being Enmanuel Valdez at the keystone instead, if the groin strain Grissom suffered early in spring training costs him the start of the season, as feared. After a long climb through the Houston organization, Valdez was traded to Boston at the 2022 deadline in the Christian Vazquez deal. Valdez finally debuted in the majors in April last year and played in 49 games with the Red Sox around missed time due to thumb and hamstring injuries. Although Valdez is not tall in stature, there is legitimate power in his bat. He muscled 16 home runs in just 106 games between Triple-A and the majors last season after blasting 28 long balls across three stops the year prior.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Sitting against righty Monday

Valdez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Since he was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on May 29, Valdez has operated in the strong side of a platoon at second base while slashing .308/.390/.654 with four home runs and one stolen base over a stretch of 20 games. Though his performance doesn't warrant a downturn in playing time, Valdez could nonetheless find himself as the odd man out of the lineup against right-handed pitching as a consequence of the Red Sox regaining health in the outfield. The recent returns of Tyler O'Neill and Wilyer Abreu from injuries will push Ceddanne Rafaela from center field to shortstop and David Hamilton from shortstop to second base Monday, leaving no room for the lefty-hitting Valdez even though Toronto will bring a righty (Chris Bassitt) to the hill.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Homers, scores three times in win

Valdez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and three runs scored in a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Valdez hit a solo home run off Kevin Gausman in the fourth inning, walked and scored in the sixth then singled and scored in the eighth. Valdez has been hot in June, hitting .341 with 10 extra-base hits and 14 RBI in 44 at-bats. He rarely plays against left-handed pitchers, going 0-for-20 against them on the season, but he is hitting a respectable .252 with six homers and 25 RBI in 115 at-bats against righties.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Getting day off versus lefty

Valdez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays. The lefty-hitting Valdez will get the night off while the Blue Jays bring southpaw Yusei Kikuchi to the bump. The freshly activated Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) will get the start at second base in place of Valdez.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Idle versus left-hander

Valdez will sit Saturday versus the Yankees. Valdez will take a seat as the Red Sox face left-hander Carlos Rodon. Jamie Westbrook will enter the lineup at second base, batting seventh against New York.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: On bench Friday

Valdez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Valdez will dodge a matchup with southpaw Garrett Crochet, giving way to Jamie Westbrook at second base Friday. Since Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) got hurt June 1, Valdez is 7-for-20 with three homers, eight RBI and one strikeout.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Valdez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The 25-year-old is expected to serve as Boston's primary second baseman against right-handing pitching due to Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) and Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) being sidelined, but Valdez will sit Tuesday as lefty Max Fried takes the mound for Atlanta.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Huge day against Detroit

Valdez went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers. Getting the start at DH and batting fifth, Valdez tormented Matt Olson and took him deep in the second and sixth innings, adding a two-bagger in between for good measure. It was the 25-year-old infielder's first start since being called back up from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, but with Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) headed back to the IL after leaving Saturday's game early, the path is clear for Valdez to see regular action at second base for at least the next couple weeks, perhaps on the strong side of a platoon with Romy Gonzalez. Valdez is batting just .179 (17-for-95) in the majors this year, but he's having a breakout season in the power department, slugging four homers in 31 games for Boston and adding six in 20 games for Worcester.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Joining taxi squad

Valdez joined the Red Sox in Baltimore but hasn't been officially recalled from Triple-A Worcester, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Outfielder/designated hitter Tyler O'Neill (knee) is back in Boston to undergo imaging, so Valdez will be part of the taxi squad for now while the Red Sox wait and see whether O'Neill requires a stint on the 10-day injured list. The 25-year-old Valdez has been playing first base and third base in addition to his familiar spot at second base while at Worcester, and is slashing .230/.360/.527 with six home runs and three steals in 20 games. He had a .452 OPS in 28 contests earlier this season with Boston.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: To be optioned Thursday

The Red Sox will option Valdez to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. After a promising rookie campaign in 2023, Valdez has slashed just .156/.186/.267 across 98 plate appearances in the majors to begin the season and is now in line to return to the minors in an effort to get back on track at the plate. Zack Short -- who was acquired from the Mets on Wednesday -- will be activated Thursday to fill Valdez's roster spot.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: In Monday's lineup

Valdez (thumb) will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game versus the Guardians. Valdez didn't play Sunday after exiting Saturday's contest with a bruised left thumb, although he might not have been in the lineup, anyway, since they were facing a lefty. Either way, he's back in there Monday against Xzavion Curry and the Guardians.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Retreats to bench Sunday

Valdez (thumb) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. After exiting Saturday's 7-2 win early with a bruised left thumb, Valdez will hit the bench for the series finale. It's unclear whether the injury is actually keeping him out of the lineup, as the lefty-hitting Valdez likely would have been on the bench anyway with a southpaw (Tyler Anderson) on the mound for the Halos. In any case, Pablo Reyes will fill in for Valdez at the keystone.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Suffers bruised thumb

Valdez left Saturday's game against the Angels due to a left thumb contusion, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Miguel Sano fell on Valdez's left hand while attempting to tag him out during the sixth inning, but Valdez appears to have escaped the incident with minimal damage. It's still possible the Red Sox hold him out of the lineup for a few days in order to allow his thumb to properly heal, though an IL stint seems unlikely at this point.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: On bench against southpaw

Valdez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. The lefty-hitting Valdez is on the bench Wednesday while southpaw Cole Irvin takes the hill for Baltimore. The righty-hitting Pablo Reyes will step in for Valdez on Wednesday, and the two could continue to form a platoon at the keystone until Vaughn Grissom (groin) is ready to return from the injured list.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Part of platoon at second base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Valdez will be part of a platoon at second base to open the season, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. While Cora didn't specify which players would platoon at the keystone, he was presumably referring to Valdez as the long side of the platoon and Pablo Reyes as the short side. It will be a short-term arrangement, as Vaughn Grissom (groin) is due back in mid-to-late April and will be in line to take over everyday duties at the position at that time.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Next up at second base

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Valdez is next in line at second base due to Vaughn Grissom (groin) being sidelined, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The team is not yet ruling Grissom out for Opening Day, but it looks like a longshot that he'll be ready. A replacement from outside the organization doesn't appear to be in the cards, which leaves Valdez at the top of the pecking order and Pablo Reyes also in the mix. Valdez, 25, struggles with the glove but has some offensive promise, having slashed .266/.311/.453 with six homers and five steals over 149 plate appearances with Boston in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Starts at second base

Valdez started at second base and went 2-for-4 in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the White Sox. Valdez, who was called up Friday after the Red Sox placed Luis Urias (calf) on the injured list, is expected to share second base with prospect Ceddanne Rafaela over the final week of the season. Rafaela will also see time in center field or shortstop.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Returns to majors

The Red Sox recalled Valdez from Triple-A Worcester on Friday. With Luis Urias (calf) on the injured list, Valdez will come up to give the Red Sox additional depth in the infield. Valdez has slashed .246/.294/.415 across 126 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Homers Tuesday

Valdez went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a second run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Rays. Valdez got Boston on the board in the third inning with a two-run blast off Zach Eflin, his fifth homer of the year and first in the big leagues since May 31. The 24-year-old Valdez has started three of four games at second base since he was recalled from Triple-A when rosters expanded, going 4-for-10 with four RBI in that span. He should continue to see regular work with Pablo Reyes (elbow) on the IL.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Gets another look at second base

Valdez will start at second base and bat ninth in Tuesday's game against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Set to make his third start at the keystone in four games, the lefty-hitting Valdez looks as though he could occupy the strong side of a platoon at the position with the righty-hitting Luis Urias while Pablo Reyes (elbow) is on the injured list. Valdez went 2-for-7 with a walk, two RBI and a run between his last two starts.

  • Red Sox's Enmanuel Valdez: Recalled from Triple-A

Boston recalled Valdez from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Valdez got an extended run with the Red Sox earlier this season but batted just .234 with a .684 OPS across 101 plate appearances. The 24-year-old has put up impressive power numbers in the minors and could perhaps platoon at second base with Luis Urias.
