Spencer Horwitz has been an accomplished hitter all throughout the Toronto system with a .303/.407/.464 triple-slash line in just over 1,700 plate appearances since 2019. He is the type of hitter that is both accepting of his walks as well as someone very willing to use his contact skills to put the ball in play having never struck out as many as 80 times in a season at a time where many minor leaguers are posting triple-digit strikeout totals. Horwitz's 2024 fantasy value is clouded in two ways. Primarily, he is only eligible at utility on draft day as he had six games at DH and five at first base last season. Secondarily, the Jays roster is rather loaded with talent and Horwitz's best path forward would be playing left field. If he were to get that job, he would still likely hit in the 9th spot of the lineup.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Exiting lineup Monday

Horwitz is out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Red Sox. Horwitz had started each of the last seven games versus right-handers upon his promotion from Triple-A Buffalo on June 7 and batted either first or second in all of those contests, but he will begin Monday's series opener on the bench. Davis Schneider gets the call at second base and will serve as the Blue Jays' leadoff batter against Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: On bench Friday

Horwitz is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Guardians. Horwitz will yield to Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the keystone Friday with southpaw Logan Allen on the mound for Cleveland. Horwitz had started at second base in five consecutive games since being called up June 7, but each of those contests featured a right-hander on the mound for the opposition.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Two hits including double Monday

Horwitz went 2-for-4 with a double in Monday's loss to the Brewers. The Blue Jays only managed four hits in total on the night, but the rookie did what he could to spark some offense. Horwitz has been as advertised since his promotion, going 3-for-10 with two walks while starting three straight games at second base and batting either first or second. The 26-year-old won't supply a lot of power, but his on-base skills should lead to production if the hitters behind him can get going.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Making season debut Saturday

Horwitz is starting at second base and batting second for Saturday's game against Oakland. Horwitz was recalled by Toronto on Friday and is now set to make his first big-league appearance of 2024. He was slashing .335/.456/514 with four home runs, 38 RBI and 44 walks over 259 plate appearances in Triple-A before his promotion. Horwitz appeared in 15 games for the big club in 2023, slashing .256/.341/.385 with one home run and seven RBI over 44 plate appearances. The 26-year-old will face off against Athletics right-hander Luis Medina on Saturday.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Recalled by Toronto

The Blue Jays recalled Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday. Since May 1, Horwitz is slashing .336/.435/.552 with three home runs, 23 RBI and 19 walks at Triple-A. He's played mostly at second base as of late, but the 26-year old has the versatility to also fill in at first base or the corner outfield. Toronto designated Cavan Biggio for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Expected to join Toronto

Horwitz is expected to join the Blue Jays in Oakland on Friday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. He will presumably be added to the roster, although it's unclear what the corresponding transaction will be. Horwitz has been on fire of late at Triple-A Buffalo, going 16-for-36 with a pair of home runs. He's also played mostly second base over that stretch, and that could be a path to playing time for him with the big club if the Jays would prefer to use Davis Schneider more in left field. Horwitz could also fill in at first base if Vladimir Guerrero sees more time across the diamond at third.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Optioned to Triple-A

Horwitz was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday. The 26-year-old came into camp hoping to land a backup job at first base behind Vladimir Guerrero, but Horwitz batted only .125 (5-for-40) in Grapefruit League action, and the signings of Daniel Vogelbach and Joey Votto (ankle) cut off his path to the 26-man roster. Horwitz slashed .337/.450/.495 with 10 homers in 107 games for Buffalo last season, but he may need to add more power to his profile to get serious consideration for a regular job in the majors.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Facing competition in camp

Horwitz could be battling the recently signed Daniel Vogelbach for a spot on the Blue Jays' bench. The 26-year-old Horwitz was expected to be the main backup at first base and DH, offering a left-handed option behind Vladimir Guerrero and Justin Turner, but that's exactly the role Vogelbach has filled during his career. Horwitz offers more contact that the veteran and slashed .337/.450/.495 for Triple-A Buffalo last season with 10 homers in 107 games, but Vogelbach's career .814 OPS against right-handed pitching and power upside would give the Jays' bench an element it currently lacks. Given the duo's limited defensive flexibility, it seems highly unlikely both would make the 26-man roster.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Sent down to minors

Horwitz was optioned to the Blue Jays' Florida Complex League affiliate on Tuesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Triple-A Buffalo's season is over, which is the reasoning behind Horwitz being sent to the Jays' FCL club. He's clearing out to make room for Brandon Belt's return from the injured list.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Hitting cleanup, Belt to IL

Horwitz is hitting cleanup Tuesday against the Rangers after Brandon Belt (back spasms) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Horwitz has excellent plate skills and questionable power for a first baseman, but he will get an opportunity to play regularly against righties in the short term. On the season, he has a .308/.400/.462 slash line with one home run, seven strikeouts and four walks in 30 plate appearances.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Blasts first career homer

Horwitz went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over Colorado. Horwitz was a last-minute lineup replacement for Brandon Belt, who was a late scratch due to back tightness. The rookie made an immediate impact in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A on Friday. His first career home run was a solo shot in the fourth. He followed that up with an RBI single in the fifth, then added another single in the seventh. Horwitz's playing time moving forward will likely hinge on how much time, if any, Belt is forced to miss.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Recalled from Buffalo

Toronto recalled Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. Horwitz returns to the majors as a backup at first base and in the corner outfield with rosters expanding from 26 to 28. The 25-year-old went 2-for-8 in a brief stint with the Blue Jays back in June and has posted an impressive .337/.450/.495 slash line with 10 homers and 72 RBI across 107 games this summer at Triple-A.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Will be promoted Friday

The Blue Jays will recall Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Eric Treuden of Jays Journal reports. Horwitz already had a brief three-game stint with the Jays in June and went 2-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored. He's slashed .337/.450/.495 across 484 plate appearances with Triple-A Buffalo and will serve as a bench bat down the stretch as the Jays make a push for the postseason.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Sent back to minors

The Blue Jays optioned Horwitz to Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. With Brandon Belt (hamstring) returning from the injured list Wednesday, the Blue Jays had no room on the 26-man active roster for Horwitz. During his five-day stint in the big leagues, Horwitz started at designated hitter in three games and went 2-for-8 with two walks and a run.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Officially promoted

The Blue Jays recalled Horwitz from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday. Horwitz holds an .826 OPS in Triple-A this season and will join the Blue Jays to provide depth at first base, although he has also been used occasionally in left field. Nathan Lukes was optioned to Buffalo in a corresponding move.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Slated for promotion

Horwitz will be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Friday's game versus the Rangers, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. It's not clear yet what the Blue Jays' corresponding move will be. Horwitz is sporting a .300/.421/.405 batting line with two home runs and three stolen bases with Buffalo this season. The 25-year-old is capable of playing first base and left field and can also handle second base in a pinch. He'll be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Healthy for spring training

Horwitz (undisclosed) will start at first base and bat second in Monday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. Horwitz came off the bench and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the Blue Jays' Grapefruit League opener Saturday, but he'll now get the chance to make his first start of the spring. The 25-year-old concluded the 2022 campaign on injured list at Triple-A Buffalo due to an unspecified injury, but he looks like he's back to full health following the offseason. Horwitz slashed .246/.361/.363 across 202 plate appearances in his first taste of Triple-A following his midseason call-up from Double-A New Hampshire in 2022.

Triple-A Buffalo placed Horwitz on its 7-day injured list Sept. 18 with an unspecified injury. Horwitz last appeared for Buffalo on Sept. 13 before he was shelved with the apparent injury. Since receiving a promotion from Double-A New Hampshire in early July, Horwitz has slashed .246/.361/.363 in 202 plate appearances with Buffalo.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Returns from thumb issue

Horwitz (thumb) started Saturday's game for Triple-A Buffalo and went 0-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports. Horwitz missed nine days due to the thumb injury but rejoined the lineup Saturday for the Bisons. The 24-year-old opened the season with Double-A New Hampshire but was promoted to Triple-A in early July, and he has a .256/.354/.395 slash line through 22 games with Buffalo.
