Tylor Megill technically didn't make the Mets' Opening Day roster in 2023, but he was immediately needed as an injury fill-in for Justin Verlander and wound up making 25 starts by the end of the season. The results were underwhelming, with Megill holding a 4.70 ERA and watching his strikeout rate plummet to 18.5 percent and walk rate rise to 10.2 percent. While he has above-average velocity, Megill's fastball was by far his most-used (55.7 percent) and least-effective (48.6 percent hard-hit rate, .408 xWOBA) pitch last season. There should be a little positive regression there in 2024, but Megill has yet to show the ability to be both healthy and effective over long periods of time. He'll probably have to compete in spring training for a spot in the Mets' rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Allows six runs in loss

Megill (2-4) took the loss against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts over three innings. Megill allowed six baserunners and five runs in a disastrous 38-pitch first inning. He managed six strikeouts over the next two frames but also surrendered a solo home run to Christopher Morel and was replaced to open the fourth at 78 pitches. The outing was Megill's worst of the season, and he has now yielded 15 earned runs over 17.2 innings in four June starts. He owns a 4.81 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 43:16 K:BB through 33.2 innings in 2024 and tentatively lines up to face the Astros next week.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Picks up second win

Megill (2-3) pitched five innings to get the win Sunday vs the Padres. He gave up two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five. Megill worked around jams in the first and fifth innings to pick up his second win in his last three starts. The 28-year-old righty has struggled getting deep into games, as he's pitched more than five innings in only one of his six starts this season. Despite this, he's been a steadying presence in the Mets' rotation with a 3.52 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Fans eight in Tuesday's loss

Megill (1-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Mets were downed 4-2 by the Marlins, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight. The right-hander was dominant early, fanning eight of the first 14 batters he faced, but Megill faded in the fifth inning and got the hook after 87 pitches (57 strikes). He's been impressive in four starts since returning from a shoulder strain, posting a 3.32 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB through 21.2 innings. Megill will try to give the Mets a little more length in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Padres.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Notches first win

Megill (1-2) picked up the win Monday against Washington, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out four in five innings of work. Megill made his third start since returning from a shoulder injury on May 20, notching his first win. The right-hander gave up his first home run of the season, a two-run shot by Joey Gallo in the fourth inning. Despite earning the win, the 28-year-old yielded four earned runs and recorded just four strikeouts, both season-worsts. Megill has now compiled a 3.00 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and a 24:9 K:BB across 21 innings. He will look to improve in his next start, tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday versus Miami.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Dazzles in no-decision

Megill came away with a no-decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers, allowing three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine. The Mets wound up getting swept in the twin bill, but that was no fault of Megill's. The right-hander generated 32 called or swinging strikes among his 98 pitches in his best performance of the season, and he left the mound with the Mets ahead 2-0 only to watch the bullpen blow the lead and lose the game in 10 innings. Megill has an impressive 16:3 K:BB through 12 innings since returning from a shoulder strain, and he'll look for his first win of 2024 when he makes his next start, which is likely to come at home this weekend against the Diamondbacks.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Dodgers-Mets rained out Monday

Megill and the Mets won't play the Dodgers on Monday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday. Megill and Gavin Stone -- who had been slated to start Monday's game -- will presumably be pushed back a day to start one half of the twin bill.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Activated from IL ahead of start

The Mets activated Megill (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Monday. Megill is set to rejoin the Mets' rotation Monday in Cleveland after missing all of April and much of May with a right shoulder strain. He was excellent during his rehab assignment, allowing just one earned run with a 23:1 K:BB over 14 innings. Megill threw 74 pitches in his fourth and final rehab start, so he should be good for 90 or so Monday.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Returning to rotation Monday

Megill (shoulder) is scheduled to return from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's series opener versus the Guardians in Cleveland, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. After exiting in his season debut March 31 with a right shoulder strain and landing on the IL, Megill is finally ready to make his second start with the Mets nearly seven weeks later. According to Puma, Megill said the injury was caused by the lower arm slot he used on his curveball, but the right-hander reported no issues with throwing his breaking pitches during his four-start minor-league rehab assignment. Megill most recently tossed 5.1 shutout innings and 74 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, so he's not expected to be under any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the big-league rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Sharp again Sunday in rehab start

Megill (shoulder) struck out six while giving up seven hits and no walks over 5.1 scoreless innings in his rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. In what could be the right-hander's final rehab start, Megill built up to 74 pitches (55 strikes) as he dominated Lehigh Valley. Over four rehab appearances, Megill has an eye-popping 23:1 K:BB over 14 innings while allowing just one run. There's no clear vacancy in the big-league rotation at the moment with Christian Scott getting promoted from Triple-A earlier this month, but the Mets could go with a six-man rotation in the short term, as they don't get a day off until May 23. If he stays on turn, Megill would get activated from the 15-day injured list Friday for a road start against the Marlins.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Making another rehab start

Megill (shoulder) will make another rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Megill has fared well across his first two rehab outings, giving up one earned run through 4.2 innings while striking out 10 batters without surrendering a walk. If Sunday's start ends up being the 28-year-old's final rehab appearance, he would be lined up to potentially start for the Mets on Friday, May 17 in Miami.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Pitches well in rehab start

Megill (shoulder) struck out seven over four scoreless, no-hit innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. Megill issued one walk and threw 62 pitches over his four frames. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza had indicated previously that Tuesday could represent Megill's final rehab start, and he certainly looks to have passed the test. However, whether he'll go back into the Mets rotation or remain at Syracuse hasn't yet been determined. The Mets could use a six-man rotation for a while, or Megill could replace Jose Butto, who is starting Tuesday for the big club.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Builds up to 51 pitches

Megill (shoulder) threw 2.2 innings in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four without walking a batter. While the outing seems short, Megill threw 51 pitches in his second rehab appearance after firing two perfect innings for Binghamton on April 27. The Mets are moving to a six-man rotation in the short term by bringing up top prospect Christian Scott on Saturday, but Megill's current schedule has him in sync with Jose Butto rather than struggling fifth starter Adrian Houser. Megill will make at least one more rehab start, and his 10:0 K:BB through 4.2 innings against Double-A hitters suggests he's already 100 percent stuff-wise, but New York may not be in a rush to activate the 28-year-old righty if there's no obvious vacancy for him in the rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Set for second rehab start Thursday

Megill (shoulder) is scheduled to make the second start of his minor-league rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Binghamton, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. On the shelf since April 1 with a right shoulder strain, Megill appears to be nearing the finish line of his recovery process after he began in his rehab assignment Saturday with High-A Brooklyn. Megill struck out six over two perfect innings with Brooklyn, but he'll move up a rung on the minor-league ladder and look to build up his pitch count to around 60 when he takes the mound again Thursday. After his upcoming outing with Binghamton, Megill will likely require one more rehab start beyond that before being deemed ready to rejoin the Mets rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Hits IL with shoulder strain

The Mets placed Megill on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right shoulder strain. Megill was diagnosed with the injury after he was forced out following four innings in his first start of the season in Sunday's loss to the Brewers. A precise timeline for Megill's return hasn't yet been established, but given that his injury is being labeled as a strain rather than soreness, he appears likely to miss more than the minimum 15 days. The Mets recalled Reed Garrett from Triple-A Syracuse to give the team a fresh relief arm in the short term, but the team will need to find a replacement when Megill's next turn through the rotation comes up this weekend in Cincinnati.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Nursing shoulder issue

Megill (0-1), who took the loss Sunday against the Brewers, was removed after four innings due to "tenderness" in his right shoulder and will undergo an MRI, Steve Gelbs of SNY reports. The right-hander struck out four and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks. The 28-year-old was in and out of trouble all afternoon as he threw just 44 of his 78 pitches for strikes, but he was able to limit the damage before the shoulder injury prompted his exit. The Mets are already shorthanded for starting pitching with Kodai Senga (shoulder) on the injured list, and Megill's availability for his next turn through the rotation is now up in the air.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Keeps building up Monday

Megill allowed one run on three hits over four innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out two without walking a batter. Aside from a second-inning solo shot by Tim Anderson, Megill looked sharp once again as he built up to 61 pitches (36 strikes). With Kodai Senga (shoulder) beginning the season on the IL, Megill appears ticketed for an Opening Day rotation spot, and he's earned it with an impressive 15:2 K:BB over 12 spring innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Dazzles against Yankees

Megill struck out six and walked two over three scoreless, no-hit innings during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. The right-hander came into the game a favorite to secure the rotation spot opened up by Kodai Senga's shoulder injury, and Megill looked the part against a New York lineup that featured mainly younger players like Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells and Everson Pereira. Megill did plunk Oswald Peraza with a pitch and threw just 29 of 49 pitches for strikes, but he got some big whiffs with his new splitter. The 28-year-old right-hander has allowed only one run through his first eight spring innings with an impressive 13:2 K:BB.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Favorite for fifth starter role

Megill has emerged as the favorite to win the Mets' No. 5 starter job, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. The 28-year-old right-hander added a splitter to his arsenal over the winter, and so far the results have been encouraging, as Megill has allowed one run over his first five Grapefruit League innings with a 7:0 K:BB. A pitch that can generate more whiffs could be crucial for his fortunes -- after posting a strikeout rate north of 25 percent in the majors in 2021 and 2022, Megill saw that number drop to 18.5 percent last year. The Mets have a hole to fill in their Opening Day rotation due to Kodai Senga's shoulder strain, and while Jose Butto and Joey Lucchesi still have a chance to make their case for the No. 5 job to start the season due to Senga's expected absence, it appears to be Megill's to lose.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Solid spring debut

Megill gave up a run on two hits and struck out three over two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. After a shaky first inning that saw him plunk Brendan Donovan to lead off the game before uncorking a wild pitch, Megill breezed through a 1-2-3 second frame. The right-hander came into camp looking to win the Mets' No. 5 starter role, but Kodai Senga's shoulder strain has opened up a second spot in the Opening Day rotation. Megill endured a rough 2023, but he worked on adding a splitter to his arsenal in the offseason and could offer more strikeout upside than the likes of Joey Lucchesi and Jose Butto, his main competition in the rotation battle.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Notches ninth win

Megill (9-8) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven. The right-hander saved his best performance of the season for last, as he hadn't worked more than six innings in any start this season. The quality start was Megill's sixth of 2023, but half of them have come in his last six outings -- a stretch in which he posted a 2.55 ERA and 31:12 K:BB through 35.1 innings. The impressive finish to the campaign should make the 28-year-old a favorite to secure an Opening Day rotation spot with the Mets in 2024, provided the team doesn't engage in another winter spending spree.
