Jeremy Pena fanned less and walked more than he did in his rookie season. Pena's average exit velocity and hard-hit rate were essentially the same. However, he flattened his swing, resulting in more grounders and a three mph drop in flyball average exit velocity, cutting his HR/FB mark in half. The change helped boost his BABIP by 25 points, but Pena's power was crushed as he left the yard only 10 times, 12 fewer times than his first season, despite 76 more plate appearances. He stole two more bases, but he profiled as someone who would take advantage of the new rules. It was sage to expect Pena to fall short of his freshman season, but the way he did it was curious, morphing into an extreme groundball hitter. From a fantasy perspective, Pena's transition is better for batting average, but he doesn't steal ample bases to be a top tier shortstop unless he reverts to hitting more flyballs. Pena is why tracking stats when drafting is precarious. He's likely going to be a fantasy asset, but the distribution of his stats has a wide range of possibilities.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Goes deep in loss

Pena went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and a stolen base in Tuesday's loss to the Athletics. Pena was the only Astros player with multiple extra-base hits in Tuesday's defeat. He doubled in the seventh and then added a solo home run in the ninth with the game well out of reach. The 26-year-old is riding a six-game hit streak during which he has recorded multiple hits three times. Pena also has homered in two of his past three games and has driven in a run in three of his last four. He's now slashing .282/.324/.403 with nine homers, 44 RBI, 49 runs, 12 steals and an 18:67 BB:K in 412 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Homers in defeat

Pena went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Mariners. Pena connected on a 414-foot blast in the seventh inning off Collin Snider. It was his third home run in July and his eighth for the season, though he's struggled to a .190 batting average in 11 games since July 6. After hitting 22 homers in his rookie season, Pena has combined for just 18 since, but he is still putting together a productive season. The 26-year-old is slashing .274/.318/.387 with 43 RBI, 48 runs and an 18:66 BB:K in 404 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Records 11th steal

Pena went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 9-1 win over the Marlins. The theft was Pena's first since June 14. He hit .240 (18-for-75) across the 20 games in between steals, and he's up to 11 pilfers on 15 attempts this season. The shortstop continues to hit well in a starting role, batting .277 with a .711 OPS, seven home runs, 40 RBI and 46 runs scored across 90 contests this season.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Another big performance

Pena went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored Friday against the Twins. Pena delivered a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to account for his production. That continued a strong run, as across his last 15 games Pena has maintained a .298 batting average with two homers, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored. His .118 ISO across 86 games exactly matches his mark from 2023, though he's on pace to easily set new career highs in RBI and stolen bases while also hitting .285.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Swats homer in victory

Pena went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run and a walk in Thursday's 5-3 victory against the Blue Jays. Houston and Toronto combined for 19 hits in the contest, but only two went for extra bases, and Pena notched the lone long ball with his solo shot to left field in the seventh inning. The shortstop has hit two homers and two doubles during his current four-game hitting streak, and he's driven in three runs while scoring four times during that span. The recent upswing in power is a welcome sign for Pena's fantasy managers after he went deep just five times across his first 80 contests of the campaign.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Scores twice, drives in two

Pena went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored Saturday against the Mets. Pena did the majority of his damage with a two-RBI double in the fourth inning. He has now driven in eight runs across his last seven starts, and he's also hit .320 in that span. Pena has just a .099 ISO across 327 plate appearances this season, though he's cut his strikeout rate to 16.5 percent and is hitting a career-best .281.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Doubles twice, drives in three

Pena went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored in Sunday's win against the Orioles. Pena hit an RBI double in the first inning before knocking a two-run double in the sixth. He'd been stuck in a 6-for-49 (.122) slump since his last multi-hit game June 5. Pena's homerless drought has now reached 31 games, and he's attempted only one steal in his last 15 contests. Still, he bumped his season slash line up to .280/.316/.382 through 314 plate appearances.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Day off Friday

Pena is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Orioles. Pena has managed just two hits over his last 32 at-bats, so it's probably not a bad time to give him a day to regroup. Mauricio Dubon will hold down shortstop for the Astros on Friday.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Reaches base three times

Pena went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored Tuesday against the Cardinals. Pena entered Tuesday's game having failed to tally an extra-base hit in 10 straight starts. Pena is now hitting .302 with five home runs and nine stolen bases across 251 plate appearances on the campaign.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Homers among three hits

Pena went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in a 9-4 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday. Pena had been in a small funk coming into the contest, going 2-for-14 over his previous four games. He bounced back Wednesday with his fourth three-hit performance of the campaign, which included his first long ball in May. Pena has been a pleasant surprise for Houston this season, slashing .326/.367/.464 with four homers, 14 RBI, 21 runs and five stolen bases through 147 plate appearances.

Pena went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and two runs scored Sunday against the Rockies. Pena had a productive weekend series in Mexico City, racking up a total of four runs scored in a pair of games. He also chipped in his third home run of the campaign Sunday, his first long ball since April 3. Pena has remained a subpar power contributor, though he also has four stolen bases and is hitting .321 across 115 plate appearances early this season.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Swipes first bag

Pena went 1-for-4 with a stolen base Sunday against the Rangers. Pena has had a strong start to the season, posting three extra-base hits -- including two homers -- across his first 38 plate appearances. He added his first stolen base of the campaign Sunday after being caught on his initial attempt March 31. Pena was successful on the basepaths only 13 times on 22 attempts in 2023, but it appears he still has the green light.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Goes through workout Monday

Pena, who landed on first base awkwardly for the final out of Sunday's ALDS Game 2 loss to the Twins, was spotted taking infield with his teammates during Monday's workout, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Pena appeared to be walking around gingerly after being retired for the final out Sunday, but it seems like he got through Monday's workout with no issues. Expect him to start at shortstop as the Astros look to regain the series edge Tuesday.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Records two steals

Pena went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Royals. Pena had gone nearly a whole month since his last steal Aug. 25. In the 24 games between thefts, he hit .316 (31-for-98) with 10 extra-base hits, eight RBI and 20 runs scored. The second-year shortstop hasn't matched his power output from 2022, but his walk rate and on-base percentage have risen while his strikeout rate has decreased, indicating a better approach at the plate. For the year, Pena has a .262/.323/.383 slash line with 10 home runs, 13 steals, 51 RBI and 81 runs scored over 143 contests.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Swipes 11th bag

Pena went 0-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base Friday against the Tigers. Pena had an unconventional but still productive game, as he reached base on catcher interference and an error in addition to his walk. That gave him the opportunity to swipe his 11th base of the season, matching his total from 2022. Pena has maintained a .299 batting average across 22 games in August, but he has only five extra-base hits and no home runs in that span.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Gets breather Sunday

Pena isn't in the Astros' lineup Sunday against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Pena has been red-hot at the plate lately, slashing .333/.447/.385 in 47 plate appearances since the start of August. He'll get a day to rest Sunday while Grae Kessinger starts at shortstop and bats eighth.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Heating up

Pena went 3-for-4 with one double, one RBI and two runs scored in Friday's victory over the Angels. Pena has been demoted to the bottom third of the Astros lineup in five of his last six games, but this performance marks his fourth multi-hit effort in his last 10 games. After bottoming out with a .205 average and only one home run in July, Pena has responded with 12 hits and seven walks in 43 plate appearances thus far in August. His glove keeps him in the lineup, and continued production like this will help return him to the top of a potent Astros lineup.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Lacking signs of improvement

Pena went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base Friday against the Rays. Pena enjoyed a productive game, nabbing his 10th stolen base of the season and second since the return from the All-Star break. Despite hitting second in the order in seven of the team's last nine games, he has also shown few signs of improvement at the plate by hitting .206 with only two RBI and four runs scored in that span. Pena has had a disappointing season overall, as he's maintained only an 82 wRC+ and .289 wOBA across 391 plate appearances for the campaign.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Back in lineup Tuesday

Astros manager Dusty Baker said in an interview on SportsTalk 790 in Houston on Tuesday that Pena (hamstring) will be back in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Colorado. A hamstring cramp necessitated Pena's removal from Saturday's game versus the Angels and he didn't play Sunday. However, it looks like the shortstop is good to go following Monday's off day.
