  • Guardians' Austin Hedges: Swats first homer

Hedges went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run Saturday in a 7-1 victory versus the Angels.

Hedges put the Guardians on the board in the second inning, plating two runs with a blast to left field. The long ball was the veteran catcher's first of the season and just his fourth hit overall through 31 plate appearances. Both Hedges and fellow backstop Bo Naylor (who played DH on Saturday) have struggled mightily in the early part of the campaign, though each went deep Saturday as the duo combined to drive in six of Cleveland's seven runs.

  • Guardians' Bo Naylor: Blows game open with grand slam

Naylor went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Saturday's 7-1 victory against the Angels.

The contest was relatively close heading into the bottom of the sixth frame, as Cleveland held a narrow 3-1 lead. However, Angels starter Reid Detmers walked three batters in the inning, and Naylor made him pay for the wildness by crushing a two-out grand slam. The homer nearly doubled Naylor's season RBI total from five to nine, and it snapped a 15-game stretch without a long ball. Aside from Saturday's big blast, it's been a pretty rough season for the backstop, as he's slashing just .183/.280/.305 with a massive 38.7 percent strikeout rate through 93 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Ben Lively: Continues to impress

Lively (1-1) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over six innings.

Lively got through four scoreless frames before the Angels posted a run in the fifth, but that was all the scoring the right-hander ended up allowing. The soon-to-be 32-year-old has yielded exactly one run in each of his past three starts, and he's given up a total of five earned runs across 21.2 innings on the season for a sterling ERA of 2.08. It's a bit difficult to imagine Lively continuing this level of success given that he entered the campaign with a 5.05 ERA across 208.2 career innings as a major-leaguer, and his Statcast numbers show that despite his strong start to the season, he has given up plenty of hard contact while rarely getting batters to chase. However, it's also worth noting that his strikeout numbers have tangibly risen -- Lively had a career 6.9 K/9 prior to this season but is at a 10.0 K/9 through four starts this year.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Will undergo MRI on hamstring

Kwan will undergo an MRI on his injured left hamstring Sunday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Kwan tweaked the hamstring during Saturday's game against the Angels while making a play in the outfield. More should be known about a potential injured list stint and timetable following the exam. Kwan is off to an excellent start this season, slashing .353/.407/.496 over 32 games.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Leaves game with hamstring injury

Kwan was lifted from Saturday's game against the Angels due to left hamstring tightness, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Kwan looked to tweak his hamstring while chasing down a flyball in the top of the third inning and was removed prior to the top of the fourth. It's not clear at this point whether he might require an MRI, but the Guardians figure to offer an update on his condition after the game.

  • Guardians' Josh Naylor: Idle against lefty

Naylor isn't in the Guardians' lineup Saturday against the Angels.

The left-handed Naylor will take a seat as fellow left-hander Reid Detmers starts on the hill for Los Angeles. David Fry will take over at first base and bat fourth.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Sits down against lefty

Florial isn't in the Guardians' lineup Saturday against the Angels.

The left-handed bat of Florial will step out of the lineup Saturday as southpaw Reid Detmers prepares to start for the Halos. His absence will move Bo Naylor into the DH role while Austin Hedges draws a start at catcher.

  • Guardians' Will Brennan: Resting versus lefty

Brennan isn't in the Guardians' lineup Saturday versus the Angels.

Left-hander Reid Detmers will toe the slab for Los Angeles on Saturday, meaning the lefty-hitting Brennan will begin the game in the dugout. Ramon Laureano will fill the void in right field and bat fifth.

  • Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Saddled with first loss

Bibee (2-1) took the loss Friday against the Angels after giving up six earned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four batters across five innings.

Coming off an incredible seven-inning shutout performance against Atlanta in his last start, Bibee turned in one of his worst performances of the season against an injury-riddled Angels lineup. He gave up a solo homer to Nolan Schanuel in the third inning before allowing four more runs to score in the fifth, capped off by a three-run shot from Mickey Moniak. Bibee now owns a 4.46 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through his first seven starts, and he'll have another chance to get back in the win column Wednesday against Detroit.

  • Guardians' Peter Strzelecki: Rejoins big-league club

The Guardians recalled Strzelecki from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander was sent to Columbus in mid-April and will rejoin the big club for Friday's series opener versus the Angels. Strzelecki has delivered a scoreless frame in each of his two outings for Cleveland this season.

  • Guardians' Tyler Beede: DFA'd by Guardians

Beede was designated for assignment on Friday, Chris Assenheimer of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

Beede has allowed 13 runs across eight innings in his last eight appearances, capped off by a five-run outing against the Astros on Thursday over one-third of an inning. His ERA has ballooned to 8.36 during that stretch after he opened up the season with six scoreless innings. Righty Peter Strzelecki was recalled in a corresponding move.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Not starting Friday

Florial is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Angels.

Florial will get a rare off day against a right-handed pitcher, with Jose Ramirez filling in at DH and Gabriel Arias playing third against the Angels' Jose Soriano. Time on the bench against RHP could become more common though, as Florial has stumbled to a .196 batting average and a 40.6 percent strikeout rate through 20 games and 64 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Goes on Double-A injured list

DeLauter was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Akron on Friday due to a left foot sprain.

DeLauter has had issues with the same foot dating back to college and had to undergo surgery last January to repair a fracture. It's not clear whether this injury is related to his previous problems, but Mandy Bell of MLB.com reported earlier this week that the Guardians don't seem overly concerned and expect DeLauter to miss only a handful of games. The top prospect has gotten off to a rough start this season with Akron, slashing just .197/.296/.295 with one home run and one stolen base over 16 games.

  • Guardians' Will Brennan: Racks up three more hits

Brennan went 3-for-4 in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Astros.

Brennan's playing time has steadied lately with the Guardians facing five straight right-handed pitchers. The outfielder's results are still all over the place -- Brennan has five multi-hit efforts and three home runs over his last nine games, but he's without a hit in the other four contests during that span. His trio of singles Thursday lifted his batting average from .228 to .253, and he's added four homers, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and two stolen bases through 90 plate appearances on the year. Brennan remains in a strong-side platoon role with the majority of his playing time coming in right field.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Records fifth steal

Rocchio went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Astros.

Rocchio is up to five steals on the year, four of which have come over his last six games. In that span, he's hitting .294 (5-for-17) with a 5:6 BB:K and four runs scored. Rocchio is up to a .218/.317/.310 slash line with no home runs, four RBI, 14 runs scored and seven doubles through 102 plate appearances. He continues to hold down the starting job at shortstop while hitting at the bottom of the order.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Takes loss Thursday

Allen (2-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings in a loss against Houston on Thursday.

Allen allowed just one run through five frames, but Jon Singleton launched a two-out, two-run homer against him in the sixth to send him to the showers and put him in line for the loss. The left-handed hurler fell one out shy of his second quality start of the campaign, though he's pitched more than five innings in three of his past four outings. After a promising rookie campaign last year, Allen has fallen back a bit in 2024 with a 5.11 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 37 frames.
