Player Outlook
The Guardians are one of the cheapest teams in the league, so while Brayan Rocchio doesn't project to perform like an everyday-caliber player in 2024, he may still get those opportunities. The switch-hitting shortstop has been a quality prospect dating back to an impressive pro debut as a teenager in 2018, but despite posting ISO's over .160 and slugging percentages over .425 across High-A and Double-A in 2021 and 2022, his power output has declined steeply since reaching Triple-A and the majors. It's possible he was able to get himself into more hitter's counts that allowed him to swing for the fences more against High-A and Double-A pitching and that has not carried over against pitchers with better control. Aside from limited raw power, Rocchio has a lot going for him. He is an excellent defensive infielder who had an 11.2 percent walk rate and 12.3 percent strikeout rate with 25 steals in 116 games at Triple-A. Barring an offseason acquisition of a more seasoned big-league shortstop, Rocchio could be Cleveland's starter at the position while likely hitting in the bottom third of the lineup.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Cranks first career homer

Rocchio went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Marlins. Rocchio's first career homer came in the third inning of his 77th game. That blast was all the offense the Guardians could put on the board in Friday's loss. The shortstop has held down a starting role this year, but he's posted a mediocre .213/.314/.287 slash line with 11 RBI, 27 runs scored, seven stolen bases and nine doubles over 192 plate appearances.

Rocchio is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Royals. Rocchio has been one of the worst-hitting regulars in baseball this season, sporting a lowly .203/.308/.259 line. He'll receive a day off while Daniel Schneemann holds down shortstop.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Getting day off

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Notches seventh steal

Rocchio went 2-for-4 with one RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Monday's 7-0 win over the Rangers. Rocchio looked decent at the plate in early May, but he went 0-for-11 across three games versus the White Sox over the weekend. The shortstop has at least shown good speed with seven steals on nine attempts this season. He's added a middling .212/.296/.280 slash line with seven RBI, 18 runs scored and eight doubles through 136 plate appearances. Rocchio continues to hold down a starting role and even got a look at leadoff versus a lefty (Garrett Crochet) Friday as the Guardians look for a solution at the top of the order with Steven Kwan (hamstring) sidelined.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Getting rest day

Rocchio is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels. Rocchio went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Saturday's 7-1 win, but he had been turning a corner of late offensively, going 5-for-14 with five walks against three strikeouts while stealing three bases in four attempts over Cleveland's preceding five contests. Gabriel Arias will get the starting nod at shortstop Sunday, but the Guardians are still seemingly viewing Rocchio as their preferred option at the position.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Records fifth steal

Rocchio went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Astros. Rocchio is up to five steals on the year, four of which have come over his last six games. In that span, he's hitting .294 (5-for-17) with a 5:6 BB:K and four runs scored. Rocchio is up to a .218/.317/.310 slash line with no home runs, four RBI, 14 runs scored and seven doubles through 102 plate appearances. He continues to hold down the starting job at shortstop while hitting at the bottom of the order.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Swipes two more bases

Rocchio went 2-for-3 with two runs scored during Sunday's extra-inning loss to Atlanta. Rocchio provided two of the Guardians' three runs, picking up his first multi-hit game since April 6 (a span of 16 games). The 23-year-old has stolen four bases this season and has scored 12 times in 90 plate appearances. However, Rocchio is still chasing his first big-league homer through 48 games and is slashing .215/.292/.304.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Picks up steal in win

Rocchio went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Thursday's 6-4 win over the Red Sox. Rocchio has gone 3-for-12 over his last four contests and continues to see a starting role at shortstop. He's yet to do much with the steady at-bats, slashing .205/.280/.301 with two steals on three attempts, four RBI, 10 runs scored, seven doubles and no home runs through 23 contests. With Gabriel Arias batting .280 in a utility role, it's unclear how much longer Rocchio will go relatively unchallenged for his spot in the lineup.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Heads to bench Sunday

Rocchio is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. The switch-hitting Rocchio will take a seat in favor of the righty-hitting Gabriel Arias, who gets the nod at shortstop with southpaw Nestor Cortes on the hill. Rocchio had started each of the previous three contests, going 1-for-11 with a double to drop his season-long average to .227.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Sitting out Tuesday

Rocchio is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's tilt against the White Sox. It's a routine day off for Rocchio, who has now started nine of 11 contests at shortstop for the Guardians this season. Gabriel Arias will get the call at short Tuesday.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Not starting Sunday

Rocchio is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Oakland. Rocchio went 3-for-11 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs while starting the first three games of the season, but he'll head to the bench Sunday. Gabriel Arias will man shortstop and bat ninth in the series finale.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Competing for starting spot

Rocchio is competing with Gabriel Arias for the Guardians' starting shortstop job, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Both Rocchio and Arias are inexperienced options, and while Arias struggled at the plate in 2023, Rocchio wasn't much better. The 23-year-old batted .247 with a .600 OPS, eight RBI, nine runs scored and six doubles over 86 plate appearances. This is one of the more even battles for Cleveland, though Rocchio has a full season of Triple-A ball under his belt and will need to be tested in the majors in the near future.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Optioned to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Rocchio to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Rocchio was recalled from Columbus on Aug. 2 and slashed .271/.308/.354 through 52 plate appearances during his latest stint in the majors. He'll be replaced on the active roster by Cam Gallagher (concussion), who returned from the 7-day injured list Thursday, but Rocchio could make a quick return to the majors once rosters expand in September.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Rocchio is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Dodgers. Rocchio and Gabriel Arias have shared the shortstop job for the Guardians since the trade of Amed Rosario, and it will be Arias at the position for this one after Rocchio had started four of the previous five games there. The 22-year-old Rocchio has collected a .610 OPS over 18 games for Cleveland this season.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Posts three hits in loss

Rocchio went 3-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Reds. Rocchio has multiple hits in three of his last seven games, though this was the first time he was in the lineup since Saturday. The shortstop is batting .288 with a .674 OPS, no home runs, four RBI, six runs scored and no stolen bases through 55 plate appearances. With Jose Tena optioned to Triple-A Columbus, Rocchio will compete with Gabriel Arias and Tyler Freeman for playing time at shortstop going forward.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Sitting Sunday

Rocchio isn't in the Guardians' lineup Sunday against the Rays. Rocchio is batting .304 (7-for-23) over his last seven games and will sit out Sunday's series finale after an 0-for-4 effort Saturday. Jose Tena will draw the start at shortstop instead and bat ninth, and Gabriel Arias will start at third base.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Drives in two Thursday

Rocchio went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. Rocchio's two doubles each knocked in a run. The infield prospect has been in the lineup regularly at shortstop lately with Gabriel Arias seeing more time at first base since Josh Naylor (oblique) and David Fry (hamstring) went on the injured list. Over 41 plate appearances this season, Rocchio has hit .275 with a .668 OPS, four doubles, three RBI and four runs scored. It's possible Rocchio could go back to splitting time at shortstop with Arias once the Guardians' lineup is healthier.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Nabs fourth straight start

Rocchio will start at third base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the White Sox. He'll stick in the lineup for a fourth straight game, with two starts coming at shortstop and two coming at third base. The Guardians haven't indicated whether Rocchio or Gabriel Arias will end up settling in as their everyday third baseman, but the team could have room for both players on the left side of the infield during the upcoming week if Jose Ramirez is suspended for throwing punches in Saturday's loss to the White Sox. Major League Baseball has yet to rule on the matter, and Ramirez will be included in the lineup Sunday as Cleveland's designated hitter.

  • Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Recalled from Columbus

Cleveland recalled Rocchio from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. The 22-year-old will jump right into the Guardians' starting lineup at third base Wednesday versus the Astros as Jose Ramirez serves as Cleveland's designated hitter. Rocchio is 3-for-14 with no extra-base hits so far at the major-league level, but he's registered a solid .291/.383/.417 batting line with three homers and 19 steals across 89 games this season in Triple-A. The Guardians have been leaning on Gabriel Arias as their primary option at shortstop since trading Amed Rosario to the Dodgers last week, but Rocchio could end up getting a look at that position while he's up with the big club.
