Player Outlook
The fourth overall pick in 2019, J.J. Bleday has struggled to find his footing so far in the big leagues. After a disappointing debut with the Marlins in 2022, he was traded last offseason in exchange for A.J. Puk. Bleday got the call to Oakland in May and went on to slash .195/.310/.355 with 10 homers and five steals in 82 games before missing most of the final two months with a left ACL sprain. He showed some good things last season, including quality pitch selection which led to a 13.9 BB%. However, Bleday has a baffling .222 BABIP in 147 career games in the majors, and his poor batted-ball numbers show it's not all bad luck. While there may be something here, he currently projects as the fourth outfielder for the A's. Most will want to wait and see until he finds his way into regular at-bats before adding him to a fantasy roster.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Getting breather against LHP

Bleday isn't in Oakland's lineup Thursday against the Angels. With southpaw Kenny Rosenberg slated to start Thursday's game for the Halos, the left-handed bat of Bleday will stay put in Oakland's dugout. Daz Cameron will fill the void in center field and bat seventh.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Three hits in win

Bleday went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in Monday's 4-0 win over the Astros. Bleday has at least one double in five straight games, with his two-bagger Monday plating the Athletics' third run. The outfielder is 10-for-21 over those five games after opening July in a 3-for-38 rut. Overall, Bleday is at a .238/.319/.438 slash line with 12 homers, 29 doubles, four triples, 36 RBI and 44 runs scored over 100 contests.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Ends homer drought

Bleday went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a double in Friday's 13-3 win over the Angels. Bleday has five extra-base hits over his last two games, but he hadn't homered since June 22 before taking Matt Moore deep in the sixth inning. Bleday also recently endured a stretch of 20 contests without a multi-hit effort. That's taken some of the shine off a decent year for the outfielder, who is slashing .232/.314/.431 with 12 homers, 34 RBI, 42 runs scored, 25 doubles and four triples over 97 games. He's yet to successfully steal a base in 2024.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Prolific afternoon in win

Bleday went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, a walk and four runs in an 18-3 win over the Phillies on Sunday. While Bleday didn't get in on the fun of the Athletics' eight-homer tally, the outfielder was a direct beneficiary of a couple of those big hits. Bleday crossed the plate on both of Brent Rooker's massive home runs, as well his seventh-inning sacrifice fly. Bleday would score his game-high fourth run of the afternoon on Seth Brown's ninth-inning single, exceeding his total in that category over the previous 19 games. Bleday's trio of extra-base hits were also particularly noteworthy, as he'd been mired in a 1-for-23 skid over the previous six games and had just one hit greater than a single in the previous 16 contests.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Idle Friday

Bleday is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies. Bleday will get the night off Friday after making four consecutive starts in center field. In his place, Daz Cameron will get the nod and bat leadoff.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Snaps brief slump Tuesday

Bleday hit out of the leadoff spot for the fourth straight game in Tuesday's win over the Angels, going 1-for-4 with an RBI single. Bleday brought Brett Harris home with the final run of the night for Oakland in the sixth via a single, giving the former his 30th RBI of the season. Coming into the night, the talented outfielder had been mired in an 0-for-13 skid that had encompassed his previous three games, but that clearly hasn't discouraged manager Mark Kotsay from keeping Bleday atop the order for the time being.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Swats 11th long ball

Bleday went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Saturday in a loss to the Twins. Bleday knotted the score with his solo blast in the bottom of the first inning, though it proved to be futile when Minnesota put up seven runs in the following frame. The homer was Bleday's 11th of the campaign, establishing a new career-best mark. The center fielder has also posted a career-high 28 RBI, 22 doubles and three triples while scoring 35 runs and slashing .256/.341/.472 through 319 plate appearances.

Bleday went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in a loss to the Padres on Wednesday. Bleday has pushed his on-base percentage back up to a solid .326 with his frequent trips on the basepaths the last two nights, and he's also carrying a 19.6 percent strikeout rate.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Delivers walk-off blast

Bleday went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. Bleday's blast was the Athletics' fifth hit of the game, but it was enough to earn a walk-off win. The outfielder is batting .294 (10-for-34) over his last nine contests, but this was his first homer since May 24. For the season, he's at a .246/.328/.469 slash line with nine long balls, 23 RBI, 26 runs scored, 18 doubles, three triples and no stolen bases over 65 games.

The outfielder is slashing .247/.317/.478 with eight homers, 22 RBI, 21 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples and no stolen bases over 206 plate appearances this season. Bleday's held a starting role all season, and that's not going to change while he's swinging a hot bat.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Game-tying homer Thursday

Bleday went 1-for-6 with a two-run home run in an extra-innings win over the Rockies on Thursday. Bleday stepped to the plate in the 11th with the Athletics having already cut a four-run deficit in half, and he delivered with a 409-foot shot to center to knot the score at 9-9. It was the second consecutive game in which Bleday left the yard, and the clutch homer also extended the outfielder's hitting streak to six games. Bleday has impressively laced 23 of his 44 hits for extra bases this season, and all three components of his .243/.315/.459 slash line are career bests.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Drives in four Saturday

Bleday went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, a three-run home run, a walk and an additional run in a win over the Marlins on Saturday. Bleday was one of several Athletics hitters to put on a lights-out performance in the 20-4 rout, continuing a recent trend of improved play at the expense of the organization that drafted him in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft in 2019. Bleday has now left the yard on three occasions in the last four games, and the three-hit day tied a season best. Bleday coaxed his OPS to .775 with the prolific afternoon, with the fact he's laced 13 of his 28 hits on the campaign for extra bases playing a key role.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: On base thrice in win

Bleday went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks in a win over the Pirates on Monday. Bleday, who opened the season as one of the Athletics' more consistent bats, had ironically been mired in a downturn during Oakland's recent improved stretch of play. Bleday entered Monday just 3-for-18 over the previous seven contests, but his three trips on the basepaths Tuesday represented a welcome uptick. Bleday also now has four two-baggers in the last six games, although he's now gone 24 games without a home run.
