Player Outlook
Kyle Stowers was part of the Orioles' Opening Day roster last season, but he was sent down after a week and ultimately spent the overwhelming majority of his year back at Triple-A Norfolk. The 26-year-old posted an .875 OPS with 17 homers in 68 games with Norfolk, but he struck out at a 27 percent rate there and in 14 contests with the big club went just 2-for-30 at the dish. Stowers remains intriguing because of his power potential, but he's been passed up by some fellow youngsters on the Orioles' outfield depth chart and others are also threatening to leapfrog him. A path to fantasy viability in 2024 might require a trade to a new organization.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Sent back to Norfolk

The Orioles optioned Stowers to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. Stowers posted a respectable .763 OPS over his five-week stay with the Orioles, but the club simply didn't have regular playing time available for him. He had started in just one of Baltimore's last nine games, so Baltimore will send him back to Norfolk so that he can see steadier at-bats. Utility man Nick Maton was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Blasts first homer

Stowers went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Thursday against Atlanta. Stowers' first homer of the season came in the seventh off Atlanta reliever Pierce Johnson and pulled the Orioles to within a run. However, those were the only three runs the O's would score. The blast was the first in the big leagues since 2022 for Stowers, who has collected a homer and four doubles among 10 hits in 34 at-bats this season.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Drawing start Thursday

Stowers (wrist) will serve as the Orioles' designated hitter and No. 8 batter in Thursday's game against Atlanta. Stowers is back in the lineup for the first time since Saturday's 5-0 win over the Rays, though he acknowledged prior to Wednesday's 4-2 win over Atlanta that he's made a full recovery from a sore right wrist. The 26-year-old has produced a respectable .723 OPS over 31 plate appearances with the big club this season, but he still may be in line for just one or two starts per week while the Orioles have all of their key outfielders available.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Available off bench Wednesday

Stowers (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta but is available off the bench, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Stowers hasn't played since Saturday's 5-0 win over the Rays due to a sore right wrist, but he noted that he's feeling good and will be ready to make a pinch-hitting appearance or enter Wednesday's contest as a defensive replacement, if needed. The 26-year-old isn't a regular in the Baltimore lineup, so he could still be a few days away from making his next start, even though he's ostensibly healthy.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Absent from lineup

Stowers (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Monday's contest in Tampa Bay. Stowers exited Saturday's game against the Rays with right wrist discomfort and hasn't played since. He's been receiving treatment and the hope is that he's available off the bench Monday. Colton Cowser, Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander will patrol the outfield for Baltimore on Monday.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Set to be recalled

The Orioles will recall Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports. Baltimore has yet to make the move official, but the club could option Heston Kjerstad to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Like Kjerstad before him, Stowers isn't likely to get steady playing time, either, given the Orioles' crowded outfield situation, but getting him regular reps is probably less of a priority than it would be with Kjerstad. Stowers had posted a .315 on-base percentage and 11 home runs across 165 plate appearances with Norfolk this season.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Optioned to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Stowers to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Stowers is tied for the Grapefruit League lead with seven home runs this spring, but ultimately it still wasn't enough to force his way onto the Orioles' crowded roster. The 26-year-old will be given regular playing time at Norfolk while awaiting another shot in the majors.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Solid showing early in camp

Stowers has been hitting lefties well during live batting practice sessions in camp, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Stowers is 1-for-5 in Grapefruit League play as well, with his lone hit a solo home run off Atlanta lefty Dylan Lee. Kubatko notes the Orioles' competition for outfield spots will be a challenging one -- Austin Hays, Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander are virtual locks for starting roles. Stowers is among a group of four or five players competing for two spots at most on the Opening Day roster, so he'll need to continue to put together good at-bats, against all pitchers, to open the campaign in Baltimore.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Activated off minor-league IL

Stowers (nose) was activated from the injured list Friday at Triple-A Norfolk, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. Stowers only wound up missing a couple of weeks because of a fractured nose. The 25-year-old outfielder has struggled in limited action this season at the major-league level but carries a .942 OPS with 18 homers and 51 RBI in 67 minor-league games.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Active at Triple-A

Stowers (shoulder) was activated from the injured list at Triple-A Norfolk and went 0-for-3 with two walks and one strikeout Friday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Stowers hit .560 with four home runs in seven rehab games, split between the Florida Complex League and High-A Aberdeen. The 25-year-old outfielder hit .067 with a 36.4 percent strikeout rate in 33 plate appearances for the big club earlier this year. He may have missed his chance to carve out a role, as the big-league outfield is pretty crowded following the recent promotion of top prospect Colton Cowser.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Demoted to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Stowers to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday. Stowers will head back to Norfolk after he went 2-for-26 with no extra-base hits and nine strikeouts over 11 games since being recalled April 30. The outfielder is batting just .067 over 30 at-bats this season with the Orioles and will look to get right with Norfolk before potentially returning to Baltimore later this season. Reliever Logan Gillaspie was called up from Triple-A on Monday and will replace Stowers on the 26-man roster.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Riding pine Saturday

Stowers is not in Saturday's lineup against the Pirates. Despite a righty (Roansy Contreras) being on the hill for Pittsburgh, Stowers will head to the bench while Ryan O'Hearn picks up a start at designated hitter. Stowers is 2-for-22 (.091 AVG) with zero home runs in 10 games since getting recalled from Triple-A on April 30.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Starting in right

Stowers is starting in right field and batting ninth for the Orioles in Friday's game versus the Pirates, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Stowers is just 2-for-24 on the season and hitless in his last 14 at-bats, but the O's are still rolling him out there regularly against righties of late. He'll have to show something soon for that to continue.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Sitting against southpaw

Stowers is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Rays, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Stowers will take a seat against left-hander Jalen Beeks on Wednesday. Anthony Santander will get the start in right field while Ryan O'Hearn will operate as the designated hitter.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: On bench versus lefty

Stowers is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. The lefty-hitting Stowers will head to the bench against Tampa Bay southpaw Shane McClanahan while Austin Hays and Anthony Santander occupy the corner spots in the Baltimore outfield in the series opener. Stowers has started in each of the Orioles' last five matchups with right-handed pitchers, but he's gone just 2-for-17 at the dish since receiving a call-up from Triple-A Norfolk. The 25-year-old could soon be in danger of losing hold of a strong-side platoon role.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Receives first start

Stowers is in left field and batting sixth for the Orioles in Monday's game in Texas. It's the first start of the season for Stowers, who had been limited to one pinch-hitting appearance which resulted in a strikeout. It had seemed like the 25-year-old was headed for a significant role between designated hitter and some starts in the outfield, but that hasn't come to fruition yet.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Not starting Saturday

Stowers remains on the bench Saturday against Boston, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Stowers featured regularly down the stretch last season and seemed to have the chance to do the same at the start of this year, with the designated hitter spot his most likely home. Instead, the Orioles have rotated other regulars through the position, with Gunnar Henderson serving as the DH on Opening Day and Anthony Santander filling the role Saturday.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Decent start to spring

Stowers has gone 5-for-13 with a double, two RBI, one run scored and a 3:3 BB:K across five Grapefruit League games. Stowers did alright in his first taste of the majors last season, slashing .253/.306/.418 with three home runs, one triple, four doubles, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored across 98 plate appearances. The 25-year-old enters 2023 unlikely to win an outfield spot all to himself, but the lefty hitter should have a good chance to play a strong-side platoon role between designated hitter and the corner outfield positions.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Sitting in Game 1

Stowers is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Stowers will get a breather after he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the first game of the series Monday. Anthony Santander will slide into the designated hitter spot while Ryan McKenna enters the lineup in left field and bats eighth in Game 1.

  • Orioles' Kyle Stowers: Slugs third career homer

Stowers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored Thursday against the Red Sox. Stowers took Matt Strahm yeard in the seventh inning to tie the game and tally his third career homer. He's gone deep twice in his last nine starts, and he's also chipped in a .360 batting average with six RBI and six runs scored in that span. Stowers has been fairly impressive across the first 79 plate appearances of his career by maintaining a 99 wRC+.
