Player Outlook
Nick Gonzales was once viewed the second baseman of the future in Pittsburgh, though as he's risen through the minor-league system, his strikeout rate has followed suit. Despite punching out at a 26.6 percent rate at Triple-A Indianapolis to start the 2023 season, he was promoted to the majors on June 23. As could be projected due to his struggles in the minors, Gonzales struggled in his first taste of big-league pitching by posting just a 64 wRC+ with a horrific .268 wOBA across 213 plate appearances. As a result, he was demoted back to Indianapolis in August, leaving Liover Peguero and Ji Hwan Bae to man second base. Gonzales will now enter 2024 in competition for the starting second base job with that duo. The good news is that neither of Bae nor Peguero were exceptional in their 2023 sample, though this is likely Gonzales's last chance to prove he won't turn into the latest disappointment in Pittsburgh.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Sitting Sunday

Gonzales isn't in the Pirates' lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. Gonzales will get a chance to regroup Sunday after going 1-for-17 with five strikeouts over his last five games. In his place, Jared Triolo will get the nod at the keystone and bat sixth.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Extends hitting streak

Gonzales went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored Saturday against Colorado. Gonzales tallied Pittsburgh's first run of the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning, his fifth long ball of the season. That knock also extended his hitting streak to six games, and he's hitting .292 with nine RBI and five runs scored across 12 contests in June.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Getting day off

Gonzales is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in St. Louis. Gonzales looks to be getting a routine maintenance day after he had started in every game for the Pirates dating back to May 13. The second-year infielder recorded a double in both of the first two games of the series, giving him 12 extra-base hits through 119 plate appearances on the season. Jared Triolo will get the nod at second base Thursday while Gonzales rests.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Keeps mashing

Gonzales went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run during Thursday's 11-7 loss to the Dodgers. The second baseman launched his fourth homer of the season in the third inning, plating Oneil Cruz with a long ball off Walker Buehler. Gonzales has been red hot of late, gong 11-for-30 (.367) with two homers, two doubles and eight RBI in his last seven games.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Drives in four

Gonzales went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI double, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single during Wednesday's 10-6 win over the Dodgers. Despite the Pirates putting up a 10-spot, Gonzales' two-RBI double in the second inning was Pittsburgh's lone extra-base hit on the day. His four RBI tied his career high, which was set May 24 against Atlanta. Before that, the 25-year-old hadn't generated more than two RBI in a game in his career. Wednesday's contest added to Gonzales' breakout campaign, as he's slashing .310/.355/.500 with 20 RBI, 12 runs and two stolen bases in 94 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Four hits in twin bill

Gonzales went 4-for-9 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI across both games of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Tigers. The Pirates were blanked in the opener and managed only three hits in total off Tarik Skubal and the Detroit bullpen, but Gonzales had one of them. The 25-year-old second baseman really came to life in the second contest, as he launched a solo shot off Keider Montero in the fourth inning and was a key part of a 10-2 rout by Pittsburgh. Gonzales has hit safely in 13 of the last 15 games as he solidifies his spot in the Bucs' lineup, batting .328 (19-for-58) over that stretch with three homers, a steal, nine runs and 14 RBI.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Drives in four

Gonzales went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, four RBI and a run scored Friday against Atlanta. Gonzales has swung the bat well since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis, and he is currently in the midst of a five-game hitting streak. In that span, he's gone 8-for-20 with seven RBI and three runs scored. He's been locked into the fifth spot in the order and should be the Pirates' everyday second baseman for the foreseeable future.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Swats two-run homer

Gonzales went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run during Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Brewers. It took Gonzales just five games since being called up from Triple-A to notch a home run, as he tagged Joe Ross for a two-run shot in the fourth inning. While Tuesday's contest marked Gonzales' second multi-RBI game this year, he's yet to generate multiple hits in a single game and is slashing .214/.267/.429 with a stolen base in 16 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Heads to bench Sunday

Gonzales is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. Following his call-up from Triple-A Indianapolis, Gonzales had started at second base in the first two games of the series and went 1-for-7 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. He'll give way to Alika Williams on Sunday, and the two could end up operating in a timeshare at the keystone until Ke'Bryan Hayes (back) returns from the injured list. Jared Triolo has acted as the Pirates' primary second baseman this season, but he'll see the majority of the starts at the hot corner while Hayes is on the mend.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Recalled from Triple-A

The Pirates recalled Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Gonzales has spent all season in Triple-A, slashing .358/.431/.608 with four homers and 19 RBI across 137 plate appearances. The 24-year-old infielder will give the Pirates another player capable of fielding multiple positions, and he could dethrone the struggling Jared Triolo as Pittsburgh's primary second baseman.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Cutting down on strikeout rate

Gonzales has a 17.4 percent strikeout rate across 132 plate appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis. Gonzales struck out at around a 28 percent clip for most of his stops in the minor leagues, so his current rate stands out positively. He's also posted a .254 ISO and 167 wRC+, albeit in his age-25 season. The Pirates have struggled to score runs consistently in the first full month of the new campaign, and Jared Triolo has only a .043 ISO and 67 wRC+ as the team's current regular second baseman. If Gonzales keeps hitting well, he could get a second shot at the majors in short order.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Loses out on second base job

Gonzales was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Gonzales entered camp with a chance to claim the starting job at second base, though he always appeared to be on the outside looking in. Positively, he struck out only 16.7 percent of the time across 36 plate appearances in Grapefruit League action. Gonzales should make his way back to Pittsburgh at some point in 2024, but for now, Liover Peguero and Jared Triolo are the top candidates to get plate appearances at the keystone.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Scores one and hits double

Gonzales went 2-for-3, hitting one double and scoring once in Pittsburgh's 9-8 loss to Baltimore on Thursday. Gonzalez is in a fierce competition for one of the final spots on the Opening Day roster, as the 2020 first-round pick is battling with Liover Peguero and Ji Hwan Bae for a utility infield job. Through a handful of spring-training at-bats, he's hitting .300, but he'll need to consistently maintain success after hitting just .209 last season across 35 games.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Recalled from Indianapolis

The Pirates recalled Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Gonzales is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies, but he could get a start or two in the final week of the 2023 campaign. The 24-year-old middle infielder has struggled to a .216/.268/.353 batting line across his first 112 major-league plate appearances this season.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Heads back to minors

The Pirates optioned Gonzales to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. Gonzales lost his spot on the 26-man active roster when the Pirates needed to make room for first baseman Alfonso Rivas, whom the team acquired from the Padres on Tuesday. Before the demotion to Triple-A, Gonzales had already seemingly lost hold of a regular role in the middle infield, as Liover Peguero and Alika Williams emerged as the Bucs' primary options at second base and shortstop, respectively. Gonzales turned in a .216/.268/.353 with two home runs and no stolen bases over 112 plate appearances with Pittsburgh in his first stint in the big leagues.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Gets Saturday off

Gonzales isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against the Phillies, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Gonzales is 0-for-9 with five strikeouts across his last three games, so he'll get a day off Saturday to regroup. Alika Williams will draw the start at shortstop, and Liover Peguero will man second base while Gonzales rests.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Racks up three hits

Gonzales went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Dodgers. He began his career with three hitless efforts, but he's now racked up three straight multi-hit games. Gonzales has showed solid power with two home runs, three doubles and a triple among his 11 hits through 11 games. He's added nine RBI and eight runs scored and should continue to split time between second base and shortstop while Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) is out.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Launches second homer

Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's loss against the Brewers. Gonzales was responsible for the Pirates' only two runs off Colin Rea with a two-run blast in the second inning. The 2020 first-round pick has gone 6-for-19 (.315) with two homers in his last six games after going 0-for-8 to start his big-league career. Gonzales is now slashing .222/.267/.556 with seven RBI and five runs scored through his first 30 plate appearances after batting .257 with a .820 OPS with Triple-A Indianapolis.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Heads to bench

Gonzales will sit Saturday against MIlwaukee. Gonzales sits for the second time in eight games since getting called up for the first time last week. He's managed three extra-base hits, including one homer, but he's also striking out at a 32.0 percent clip. Ji Hwan Bae and Tucupita Marcano will be the middle infielders Saturday.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Called up Friday

Gonzales was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic reports. Gonzales will join the Pirates in Miami and will be poised to make his major-league debut some time this weekend. The 24-year-old has produced a .257 batting average with six homers, 27 RBI, 38 runs and a stolen base over 218 at-bats in 57 games for Triple-A Indianapolis this season. Gonzales was selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft but has seen his prospect status diminish in the last couple years due to injuries and a hit tool that hasn't developed as quickly as the organization hoped. He could still get a long look in the majors as the Pirates try to find a long-term solution at second base.
