Chicago Bears third string quarterback Matt Blanchard was kind of hard to miss at the team's rookie minicamp on Friday, he was the guy with a camera attached to his helmet. The team's video department mounted a small camera to the left side of Blanchard's helmet to give the coaching staff a new way to evaluate the second-year quarterback.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the hope is that the film from the helmet cam will provide the coaching staff with useful film that will show what exactly a quarterback's seeing as a play develops.
Blanchard, who signed with the Bears in May 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is hoping to make the active roster this season after spending most of 2012 on the Bears' practice squad.
If first-year Chicago coach Marc Trestman finds the footage from the helmet cam useful, you may eventually see other Bears quarterbacks like Jay Cutler and Josh McCown wearing it for a practice or two.
The helmet cam isn't a completely new idea in the NFL. Former Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola wore one during a June minicamp with St. Louis last season while Eagles quarterback Michael Vick wore one in practice leading up to the January 2011 Pro Bowl.
