Bills' Ty Johnson: Exits Sunday's game

Prior to his exit from the contest, Johnson carried twice for seven yards. In his absence, James Cook and Ray Davis are available to handle Buffalo's RB duties.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Makes 53-man roster
Johnson secured a spot on Buffalo's 53-man roster Tuesday, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Johnson was one of three running backs to make the team, joining starter James Cook and rookie fourth-round draft pick Ray Davis. Johnson and Davis are expected to split backup duties. Cook and Davis are listed at 210 and 220 pounds, respectively, so both backups are better suited for short-yardage work than the 190-pound Cook, though 237-pound quarterback Josh Allen often calls his own number in such situations.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Small role in Saturday's win
Johnson carried the ball once for six yards in Saturday's preseason win over the Steelers. He was not targeted in the passing game.
Johnson was and perhaps still is in the running to be James Cook's primary backup, but he hurt his hamstring in late July and missed the first preseason game, then finally returned to practice last week and played just seven snaps Saturday. Rookie Ray Davis looks like the favorite for the job now, though the Bills could mix and match when Cook needs a breather due to the differing skill sets of Johnson and Davis. It's worth noting that undrafted rookie Frank Gore ran well Saturday, logging eight carries for 41 yards, while veteran Darrynton Evans ran seven times for 37 yards.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Healthy again
Johnson (hamstring) returned to practice Monday, Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News reports.
Johnson suffered a hamstring injury during practice last month but is now healthy again. The 2019 sixth-round pick will likely serve as a reserve running back and kick returner once the regular season begins. He's in a battle with rookie Ray Davis for the top backup job to starting running back James Cook.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Not in uniform Saturday
Johnson (hamstring) wasn't in uniform ahead of Saturday's preseason game against the Bears, according to Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News.
The same applies to WRs Mack Hollins (leg), Chase Claypool (toe) and Justin Shorter (knee). Johnson's next opportunity to see exhibition action will be Aug. 17 against the Steelers. Once he returns to the mix, Johnson will resume competing with Ray Davis for slotting behind top RB James Cook.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Out with hamstring injury
Johnson will miss practice Tuesday with a hamstring injury, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Johnson departed Monday's practice early and was evaluated by trainers, leaving rookie Ray Davis as the most likely RB to rotate in behind James Cook with the starting offense. Johnson and Davis reportedly had a near-even split of first-team reps Sunday when Cook was absent for personal reasons, with Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic noting a slight advantage in Johnson's favor. Missed time due to a hamstring injury could improve Davis' odds of taking over the No. 2 RB role that Johnson handled late last season.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Exits practice injured
Johnson left Monday's practice early after an apparent injury, Alex Brasky of the Batavia Daily News reports.
Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports that Johnson and rookie Ray Davis had a "pretty close to even split" of first-team reps Sunday when starter James Cook was absent for personal reasons. Cook returned Monday, with Johnson then suffering an apparent lower-body injury not long after.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Sticking with Buffalo
Johnson is re-signing with Buffalo on a one-year contract, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
The 2019 sixth-round pick played in 18 games for the Lions and 44 for the Jets before landing in Buffalo last year. Johnson then spent the first month and a half of the 2023 season on the practice squad, eventually getting a promotion after Damien Harris suffered a season-ending head/neck injury in mid-October. By the end of the year, Johnson had eclipsed Latavius Murray as the team's No. 2 RB, getting 15 carries and three targets for 80 total yards in two playoff games. He'll now stick in Buffalo, where James Cook and Darrynton Evans are the only other RBs under contract at the start of the 2024 league year.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Works way up depth chart in 2023
Johnson gained 132 rushing yards on 30 carries (4.4 yards per rush) and caught all seven of his targets for 62 yards and a touchdown in 10 regular-season games this season.
Earlier in the season, the veteran RB saw most of his action on special teams, but by the time the Bills got to their playoff run, Johnson had climbed over an injured Damien Harris (head/neck), a freshly signed Leonard Fournette and an aging Latavius Murray on the depth chart. Johnson actually saw 20 carries in the playoffs, suggesting the team trusts him in its dynamic offense. The former Lion and Jet is still just 26 years old and the Bills could bring him back in a depth role behind James Cook in 2024, but Johnson will need to be re-signed in the offseason in that case.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Cleared to play vs. Steelers
Johnson (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's wild-card round game against the Steelers.
Johnson was a limited participant in all three of Buffalo's practices heading into the postseason, but Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 reports that the running back has cleared concussion protocol. Johnson, Leonard Fournette and Latavius Murray are all options to spell starting running back James Cook, with Johnson profiling as the youngest and shiftiest of the three depth options.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Getting work in
Johnson (concussion) will be a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Chris Brown of the Bills Radio Network reports.
Johnson suffered a concussion in Sunday's win over the Dolphins, but he seems to have made progress on some level as he navigates the five-step protocol. He'll still likely need to get in a full practice Thursday or Friday, plus he'll need to be cleared by an independent neurologist before getting the green light to suit up in Sunday's wild-card game against the Steelers.

Bills' Ty Johnson: Tests confirm concussion
Johnson (concussion) has been downgraded to out Sunday against the Dolphins.
Johnson was evaluated for a head injury, and the tests revealed a concussion. He won't return to Sunday's game, so Johnson will finish the regular season with 30 carries for 132 yards, as well as seven catches on as many targets for 62 yards and a touchdown. Johnson will have to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol to suit up in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Johnson is being evaluated for a head injury Sunday against the Dolphins.
Johnson was injured on a big hit just outside the end zone in the final seconds of the first half.
