Cardinals' Chad Ryland: Set for kicking duties again
Ryland will be the Cardinals' kicker against the Packers on Sunday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
With Matt Prater nursing a knee injury, Ryland was elevated from the practice squad Saturday. Prater was deemed inactive Sunday morning, so Ryland will handle kicking duties for a second straight week. The Cardinals elevated Ryland from their practice squad to their active roster Saturday ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers.
Matt Prater (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday, so the addition of Ryland provides much-needed insurance in case Prater is unable to go. While Prater was sidelined last week versus San Francisco, Ryland stepped in at kicker and went 3-for-4 on field-goal tries, with his lone miss being a blocked 45-yard attempt. Ryland's elevation Saturday could be a sign that Prater will be held out again Sunday, though that may not be confirmed until Arizona releases its inactive list approximately 90 minutes prior to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.

Ryland was elevated from the Cardinals' practice squad Saturday to fill in for the injured Matt Prater (left knee) in Week 5, and the former fared well aside from having a 45-yard FGA blocked and returned for a touchdown in the second quarter. On Monday, Ryland reverted to the practice squad, per the NFL's transaction log, after which coach Jonathan Gannon told Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com that the team was taking a wait-and-see approach with Prater. Such comments indicate Ryland may be called upon for place-kicking duties again for Sunday's game in Green Bay if Prater doesn't make enough progress in his recovery.

A fourth-round pick of the Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft, Ryland is coming off a rookie campaign in which he made just 64 percent of his field-goal attempts (16 of 25). Though the Maryland product has a strong kicking leg, he'll need to display better accuracy in the coming months in order to hold off the challenge presented by the 28-year-old Slye, who connected on 79.2 percent of his field-goal tries with the Commanders last season.

Patriots' Chad Ryland: Records 72 points this past season
Ryland connected on 16 of his 25 field-goal attempts and 24 of his 25 extra-point tries in 17 games during the 2023 season.
The Patriots took Ryland, who logged 72 points in that span, in the fourth round (112th overall) of last April's NFL draft, and the Maryland product took over the team's kicking job ahead of Week 1 following the trade of Nick Folk to the Titans. Accuracy issues and working behind an inconsistent offense limited Ryland's fantasy utility as a rookie, but he'll presumably have an opportunity to continue his role in 2024. That said, when it comes to New England's looming roster overhaul, it wouldn't surprise us to see competition for Ryland brought in ahead of next season.

Ryland has now missed three of his last six field-goal tries, and the 41-yarder he hooked to the left in Week 15 was not particularly close. For the second game in a row, Ryland didn't record any field-goal attempts; however, this time around the Patriots offense showed signs of life (after being shut out Week 13), which resulted in the kicker's only opportunities Thursday arriving on extra points. Ryland is still not a high-percentage fantasy option ahead of New England's Dec. 17 contest against the Chiefs, but the 2023 fourth-rounder has at least maintained his weekly role despite his accuracy issues (12 of 18 on FG tries) through 13 games this season.

Heading into Week 13 action, there had been some speculation that Ryland, who had missed 35-yard field-goal tries in consecutive games, could be potentially be replaced as the Patriots' kicker. Though Matthew Wright was added to the team's practice squad, Ryland maintained his role Sunday.
