• Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Looks sharp in no-decision

  Flaherty allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks across six innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Guardians. He struck out six. In what was possibly his last start for Detroit, Flaherty made sure to leave a good impression. The righty lowered his season ERA to 2.95 and allowed zero earned runs for the fifth time this year. Flaherty is on a one-year deal, which has naturally made him a much-discussed trade candidate with the Tigers sitting at 50-53. He is currently penciled in to take the mound again Monday against the Guardians once more, but with the trade deadline on Tuesday, it remains to be seen if the 28-year-old will still be with the team by the time his next turn in the rotation comes around. If Flaherty is dealt, he should remain a strong fantasy asset given his performance so far this season.

• Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Fans eight in win

  Flaherty (7-5) earned the win Friday versus Toronto, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out eight. The Detroit right-hander collected his second consecutive win, as he conjured 17 whiffs to produce eight punchouts. In his second start since returning from a back injury, Flaherty masterfully commanded his arsenal over 98 pitches. He has now pitched to a 3.13 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 127:17 K:BB across 100.2 innings, making him a prime trade target at the upcoming July 30 deadline. Flaherty is currently scheduled to make his next start against the Guardians on the road.

• Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Returns in stride

  Flaherty (6-5) picked up the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings against the Guardians. He struck out four. Flaherty, who had not pitched since June 27 due to lingering back issues, received plenty of run support while holding the Guardians' lineup in check, save for a solo homer in the third by Bo Naylor. Flaherty managed 83 pitches through six innings and was staked with a 10-1 lead by the time he was replaced. It was the fifth time in six starts Flaherty has allowed no more than one run, with the lone exception coming in his previous start, which immediately preceded his two-week hiatus. Flaherty has been a model of consistency in his first year in Detroit, never completing a full seven innings yet also never completing fewer than five through 16 starts this season. Through 95 innings, he's recorded 119 strikeouts to go along with a 3.13 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.

• Tigers' Jack Flaherty: Rejoining rotation Thursday

  The Tigers list Flaherty (back) as their scheduled starter for Thursday's game against the Guardians in Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Flaherty avoided a stint on the injured list when a back issue reared its head coming out of his June 27 start versus the Angels, but he'll end up having missed nearly two weeks while waiting for two pain-killing injections to provide some relief. The Tigers seem confident that the extended rest will help resolve Flaherty's back problems, which also resulted in him missing a turn through the rotation in the first half of June. Back issues aside, Flaherty has been even better than the Tigers could have hoped when they signed him to a one-year, $14 million deal this winter. Over his 15 starts, Flaherty has gone 5-5 with a 3.24 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 115:14 K:BB in 89 innings.

It's worrisome that Flaherty has now had two turns skipped over the last month with back problems, but it appears he will again avoid a stint on the injured list. Keider Montero will start Wednesday in Flaherty's place.

However, the right-hander would go on to surrender two more long balls on the night as the Tigers failed to back him with anything on offense. Flaherty had allowed one run or fewer in four consecutive starts coming in, and no runs in three of his previous four. The three home runs he gave up Thursday also marked a season high.

Flaherty threw four scoreless innings before surrendering a solo home run to Tommy Pham in the fifth. He then allowed a hit and a walk with two outs in the sixth before being pulled just shy of a quality start at 98 pitches. The home run was the first earned run Flaherty has allowed since May 23, and the pitch count was encouraging considering he was limited to 73 pitches in his last outing following a back injury. On the season, he owns a 2.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 108:13 K:BB over 83.1 innings and tentatively lines up to face the Phillies next week.

Despite having only the one win so far, the righty has had a nice bounceback campaign to this point after posting a 4.99 ERA with the Orioles and Cardinals last year. Flaherty has been buoyed by a rise in strikeouts, as he now has an 11.9 K/9 this season, up from 9.2 in 2023. He'll look to keep rolling in his next scheduled outing, which is is penciled in for Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Flaherty opened Sunday's contest by firing five scoreless innings before Kyle Tucker launched a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. The Astros scratched across another run on him in the seventh frame before the right-hander's day came to an end with two outs in the inning. The performance marked his third straight quality start and sixth of the season over eight outings. Flaherty now owns a 3.88 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 63 strikeouts over 48.2 innings in eight starts in 2024 and will look to earn his first win of the year in his next projected start Saturday on the road in Arizona.
