  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Doesn't crack Opening Day roster

Yorke was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Yorke looked to have a good chance to crack the Opening Day roster, particularly with Spencer Horwitz (wrist) sidelined. However, he collected only seven hits -- two of which went for extra bases -- across 34 at-bats in Grapefruit League action and will begin the season in the minors. Yorke should be in consideration for a promotion in the case of an injury or poor performance for a regular in Pittsburgh's lineup, so there's still a chance he can make an impact this season.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Chance to break camp with team

Yorke remains in the mix for a roster spot to begin the regular season, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Yorke has gotten a lot of run this spring and collected seven hits across 30 Grapefruit League at-bats. He has only two extra-base hits with 10 strikeouts, but he has also drawn six walks. With Spencer Horwitz (wrist) likely to begin the regular season on the injured list, one of Yorke, Billy Cook or DJ Stewart is likely to break camp with the team and earn at least some playing time at first base.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Uncertain role

Yorke has been working out at second base to begin spring training, but he could be an option to fill in at first base in the absence of Spencer Horwitz (wrist), Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Yorke has put up excellent numbers at most of his minor-league stops, but he has an uncertain defensive home. Nick Gonzales is the favorite to start at second base, while the addition of Tommy Pham likely shuts the door on Yorke's potential to play regularly in the outfield. However, Horwitz's injury opens up potential playing time at first base, though there are several other options at the position.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Defensive concerns in outfield

Yorke will have to prove he can handle right field defensively to earn the starting role to begin the regular season, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

The Pirates have an unresolved playing time situation in right field with Billy Cook and Joshua Palacios the other two primary options in addition to Yorke. Yorke could have the best bat after posting a 127 wRC+ at Triple-A last season, though he's played only four games in right field and 41 total in the outfield during his time as a pro. He's certainly in contention for regular at-bats in right field, but his ability with the glove will be key to monitor during spring training.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Pops second career homer

Yorke went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Saturday against the Yankees.

Yorke has started 10 of 12 games since making his big-league debut, and he popped his second career home run Saturday. Yorke also has two steals, though his 28.9 percent strikeout rate is a concern. He should be in consideration for a roster spot to begin the 2025 campaign.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Receiving Thursday off

Yorke is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Brewers.

He will give up his spot in the Pittsburgh infield to Liover Peguero, who draws a second straight start at shortstop while Nick Gonzales serves as the Pirates' second baseman. Yorke had been included in the lineup in eight of the last nine games while picking up starts at second base, third base, right field and left field and batting .259 with a home run and two stolen bases.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Solidifying spot in everyday lineup

Yorke will start in right field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Brewers.

After making each of his last three starts at second base, Yorke will shift to the outfield Wednesday while normal right fielder Bryan De La Cruz gets a day off. Yorke has now picked up eight starts in the Pirates' last nine games and has produced a .280/.296/.400 slash line with one home run and two steals since being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sept. 16. He should be in store for near-everyday playing time in the final week of the season.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Tallies first run, RBI

Yorke went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals.

Yorke reached on an infield single in his second trip to the plate before stealing second, though he was left stranded. He then recorded a clutch knock with two outs in the sixth and eventually came home on a three-run shot from Billy Cook as Pittsburgh took a 5-4 lead. The second baseman has now recorded multiple hits in back-to-back contests after going 0-for-3 in his Pirates debut Monday. His RBI and run scored on Wednesday also marked the firsts of his MLB career.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Three hits in loss

Yorke went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Cardinals.

Yorke went 0-for-3 with a stolen base in his major-league debut Monday. It didn't take him long to check off another first, as he had three singles in his second career game. The contact-oriented infielder should continue to get steady playing time down the stretch as the Pirates evaluate his major-league readiness for 2025. Yorke has started both of his big-league contests at second base, which could lead to Nick Gonzales being forced to share shortstop with Isiah Kiner-Falefa to finish the year.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Headed to big leagues

The Pirates will select Yorke's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Acquired from the Red Sox for Quinn Priester at the trade deadline, Yorke has slashed .303/.385/.449 with 12 home runs and 21 stolen bases between the Double- and Triple-A level this season. The 22-year-old is primarily a second baseman, but he also has a bit of experience at third base, shortstop and all three outfield spots. Yorke should play pretty often for Pittsburgh down the stretch.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Call-up official, will start Monday

The Pirates selected Yorke's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of Monday's game against the Cardinals. He'll start at second base and bat seventh in the series opener.

Pittsburgh optioned infielder Alika Williams to Triple-A to clear a spot on the active roster for Yorke, who could be in store for a near-everyday role while getting his first taste of the big leagues over the final two weeks of the season. After being acquired from the Red Sox at the trade deadline, Yorke slashed .359/.438/.516 with two home runs and eight stolen bases in 176 plate appearances at Indianapolis to earn his way to the majors. Yorke has spent most of his minor-league career at second base, but he also picked up starts at shortstop and third base along with all three outfield spots this season and could end up filling a super-utility role for the Pirates.

  • Pirates' Nick Yorke: Moved to Pittsburgh

The Pirates acquired Yorke from the Red Sox on Monday in exchange for right-hander Quinn Priester, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Though Yorke was regarded as one of the Red Sox's top position prospects, he had lost some sheen over the past couple of years while his performance had dipped between stops at High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. Yorke had gotten off to an underwhelming start to the current season at Portland, but he had started to turn some heads again after getting a promotion in early June to Triple-A Worcester, where he posted a .317/.414/.497 slash line with six home runs and six steals in 169 plate appearances while splitting time between second base and left field. Despite showing improvement with the bat at Triple-A, Yorke's long-term path to playing time in Boston was still somewhat blocked, but he should have a greater opportunity to eventually settle into an everyday role with a Pittsburgh organization that's comparatively lacking in established bats at the big-league level. Look for Yorke to report to Triple-A Indianapolis initially, but it wouldn't be surprising if he received his first big-league call-up later in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Nick Yorke: Adjusting well to Triple-A

Yorke is 9-for-22 with two home runs, one double, six RBI and six runs scored in his first six games at Triple-A Worcester.

Yorke's line at Double-A Portland -- .251/.325/.366 -- didn't scream promotion, but the Red Sox saw enough improvement to warrant the move up the minor-league ladder, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. His strikeout rate and chase rate both dropped by about five percent, and he was making better contact, upping his exit velocity by 3.5 mph. "Part of our job is rewarding guys when we see progress like that," Red Sox hitting coordinator Dillon Lawson said. "The bat-to-ball skills, controlling the strike zone, the swing decisions, the improvements he's made in those realms, plus obviously his defensive versatility, it made it the right move at the right time." It looks like the move out of Portland has energized the 2020 first-round pick.

  • Red Sox's Nick Yorke: Bumped up to Triple-A

The Red Sox promoted Yorke from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old made his Worcester debut in Wednesday's 9-6 loss to Rochester, starting at second base while going 1-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base. Yorke received the call-up to Worcester despite turning in a pedestrian .251/.325/.366 slash line over his 197 plate appearances with Portland on the season.

  • Red Sox's Nick Yorke: Slated for work in outfield

The Red Sox will have Yorke work into outfield drills during spring training in an attempt to increase his versatility, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Yorke is in big-league camp as a non-roster player, and while he doesn't have a realistic shot to make the team, he will get a chance to make an impression while also showing what he can do in the outfield. He has played second base exclusively so far in the minor leagues. A first-round pick in 2020, Yorke spent last season at Double-A Portland, slashing .268/.350/.435 with 13 homers and 18 steals across 506 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Nick Yorke: Rolling along at Double-A

Yorke is slashing .275/.361/.453 with nine home runs, six steals and a 25 percent strikeout rate in 69 games with Double-A Portland.

He has been 22 percent better than league average by wRC+ as one of the younger hitters at Double-A. Yorke, who won't turn 22 until Opening Day of next year, has played exclusively at second base for the Sea Dogs aside from 10 starts at designated hitter. He isn't expected to add much defensive value, so Yorke needs to sustain a high level of offensive production as he inches closer to the big leagues.

  • Red Sox's Nick Yorke: More walks than Ks at Double-A

Yorke is slashing .241/.450/.483 with two home runs, 10 walks and eight strikeouts in 40 plate appearances for Double-A Portland.

Yorke, who just turned 21, got a vote of confidence with the assignment to Double-A after having an injury-affected 2022 season where he was a below league-average hitter (84 wRC+) at High-A. He had an incredibly strong debut season in 2021, so if Yorke continues to have success against Double-A pitching, last year's rough season will look more and more like the outlier. The bat-first infielder has played second base and designated hitter in the early going.

  • Red Sox's Nick Yorke: Endures tough 2022 season

Yorke hit just .231/.303/.365 with 11 homers and eight steals in 80 games for High-A Greenville this season.

The 2020 draft's No. 17 pick, Yorke popped in the minors in 2021 (.325/.412/.516 with 14 homers and 13 steals in 97 games), including a strong stint in Greenville, but his second go-around at the same level was marred by injury and poor performance. That'll likely send him plummeting down the prospect lists heading into next year, but the 20-year-old still has plenty of upside and makes for an intriguing buy-low target for dynasty managers with an appetite for risk.
