Player Outlook
Abner Uribe opened 2024 as the Brewers' closer with Devin Williams on the injured list, but lost the role in mid-April due to his inability to find the strike zone (43 percent ball percentage). A few weeks later, the 24-year-old was demoted to the minors, where he was limited to seven appearances with Triple-A Nashville before undergoing season-ending knee surgery. With Uribe expected to be 100 percent healthy for the start of spring training, he's once again a candidate to receive save chances for Milwaukee in 2025. His primary appeal for the ninth-inning role is his velocity, as he's able to hit triple-digits on the radar gun. However, Uribe has a 16.6 percent walk rate in 45 career innings in the majors, which likely puts him behind Trevor Megill and Joel Payamps on the Brewers' hierarchy for saves. Nevertheless, the flamethrowing righty has the stuff to be a high-leverage reliever if he can throw enough strikes.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Ready for spring debut

Uribe (knee) will make his Cactus League debut Wednesday against the White Sox, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Uribe has been brought along slowly in Brewers camp after surgery last July to repair a lateral meniscus tear. The 24-year-old has the stuff to fill a high-leverage role in the Milwaukee bullpen, but Uribe struggled during his stint in the majors last season and might go to Triple-A Nashville for a while to make up for lost time.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Going slow

Uribe will go slow as he comes back from right knee surgery, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. He underwent surgery to repair a lateral miniscus tear in mid-June of 2024. This is a vague report, but it sounds like Uribe's status is questionable for Opening Day. Brewers closer Trevor Megill is dealing with an undisclosed injury, so if Uribe can get up to speed and Megill's injury lingers, Uribe could figure into the ninth-inning mix.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Candidate for saves

Uribe (knee) is a candidate to earn save chances after Devin Williams was traded to the Yankees on Friday, Brian Murphy of MLB.com reports. Uribe began the 2024 season as the closer for the Brewers with Williams on the injured list, though he lost the role in mid-April and didn't appear in the majors after May 1. His primary appeal in the ninth-inning role is his velocity, as he averages over 100 mph on his fastball. However, he has a 16.6 percent walk rate in 45 career innings in the majors, leaving Trevor Megill as seemingly the top option entering 2025.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Expected to be ready for spring

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Thursday that Uribe (knee) is expected to be 100 percent for the start of spring training, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Uribe underwent surgery in July to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, an injury he suffered while at Triple-A Nashville. The hard-throwing righty had a brief turn as the Brewers' closer at the beginning of the season but finished with a 6.91 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 14.1 innings in the majors. Uribe has the stuff to be a high-leverage reliever if he can throw enough strikes.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Out for rest of season

Uribe underwent surgery on his right knee Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Uribe's return timeline had been uncertain heading into the operation, though he's now been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 campaign and hopes to be ready for the start of spring training. The 24-year-old reliever will finish the year with a 6.91 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 14.1 innings in the majors.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: PIcks up second win

Uribe (2-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Padres after he allowed a hit and no walks in a scoreless eighth inning. He had one strikeout. The right-hander appeared set to blow a scoreless tie after giving up a leadoff triple, but he retired the next three batters on 10 pitches. Uribe entered in a non-save situation for the second straight day, while Joel Payamps closed out the ninth inning Wednesday for his second save of the campaign. Uribe and Payamps should be considered co-closers for the time being as the only Brewers relievers with any saves this season, besides Thyago Vieira's three-inning save.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Blows save, earns win

Uribe (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning Friday. He blew a save chance but picked up a win over Seattle. Uribe blew the 5-3 lead in the ninth inning, but the Brewers walked it off win in the bottom of the frame. The 23-year-old had converted each of his first three save attempts to begin the year before Friday's hiccup. He owns a 6.75 ERA with a 2:2 K:BB through four innings.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Picks up third save

Uribe allowed no hits and one walk in a scoreless ninth inning earn the save in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Twins. He did not record a strikeout. The 23-year-old righty issued a five-pitch walk to start the frame but promptly induced a double play and retired the side on just eight pitches. Uribe already has three saves for the 4-0 Brewers, with Joel Payamps also notching a save when Uribe had pitched the previous two days. Uribe appears to be separating himself as the top option to close with Devin Williams (back) facing an extended absence to begin the season.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Path to saves clearer

Uribe could be in line to receive regular save chances with Devin Williams (back) out for three months, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Uribe and Joel Payamps project as the two likely candidates to take over as Milwaukee's closer after Williams was diagnosed with two stress fractures in his back Wednesday. In his first season of big-league action, Uribe logged a 1.76 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 30.2 frames. However, neither Uribe (six earned runs, 4.1 innings) nor Payamps (five earned runs, 2.2 innings) have put together a strong spring, making it unclear who the early favorite is for Opening Day.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Knocked around Tuesday

Uribe threw one-third of an inning of relief and gave up four earned runs in Tuesday's spring game. He allowed four hits, walked a batter and hit two others. Tuesday's tough outing may not mean much long-term, but it is worth noting with closer Devin Williams being evaluated for a back injury. Either Uribe or Joel Payamps would likely step in if Williams misses Opening Day, but neither player has been sharp this spring, and that could open the door for other relievers to join the mix.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Shakes off slow start

Uribe tossed a scoreless inning of relief in Thursday's Cactus League contest against the White Sox. Uribe was tagged for two earned runs in his spring debut, but he has since thrown three scoreless frames over three appearances, allowing two runners to reach base over that span. After a sterling rookie season in which he struck out 39 batters over 30.2 innings and posted a 1.76 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, he is on track to open the regular season with a high-leverage role in Milwaukee's bullpen.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Optioned to Double-A

Uribe was optioned Monday to Double-A Biloxi, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Uribe reached Double-A for two appearances in 2022, and it looks like the right-hander will return to Biloxi to open this season. The right-hander was limited to just those two games because of a torn meniscus in his right knee, but he shows a fastball that can touch triple digits and a swing-and-miss slider, and he could make his MLB debut sometime this summer.

  • Brewers' Abner Uribe: Undergoes knee surgery

Uribe underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the meniscus in his left knee and will be sidelined for 6-to-8 months, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Uribe is a flamethrower who was moving up prospect lists, but his season will come to an early end due to his injury. If all goes as planned with his recovery, the 21-year-old righty should be ready to go when spring training rolls around in 2023.
