Cubs' Vidal Brujan: Returns from IL
The Cubs reinstated Brujan (elbow) from the injured list Tuesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Brujan has been on the injured list all season due to a sprained right elbow. He began a rehab assignment Thursday, going 4-for-13 with a stolen base in three games at Triple-A Iowa. Now fully healthy, the 27-year-old will replace Matt Shaw on the active roster and give the Cubs additional depth at nearly every position.

Cubs' Vidal Brujan: Beginning rehab assignment
Brujan (elbow) was cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Brujan had a setback with his right elbow sprain last week, but he apparently bounced back quickly. It's not clear how many rehab games Brujan will need before being activated from the 10-day injured list. Once he's ready, he will fill a utility role for the Cubs.

Brujan or Gage Workman are the two players most likely to lose their spot to Hoerner, but Workman would have to be returned to Detroit as a Rule 5 pick if he gets pushed off the MLB roster. Brujan is out of minor-league options himself, so he would need to be designated for assignment in that scenario. Brujan will travel with the Cubs for their two-game series against the Dodgers in Tokyo on March 18 and 19, Jesse Friedman of MLB.com reports.
Brujan will serve as infield depth in Tokyo with Nico Hoerner (forearm) not making the trip. Rule 5 pick Gage Workman also made the roster. Hoerner's eventual return could squeeze both players out of the picture, but for the time being, Brujan appears set to see time at second base alongside Jon Berti, while Workman will also be in the mix. Cubs' Vidal Brujan: Plans to steal more bases
Brujan plans to be more aggressive in attempting to steal bases this season with the Cubs, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Brujan stole only five bases and was caught six times in 2024 during his lone season in Miami, and he said the Marlins "didn't give me the green light that I needed." Following an offseason trade to the Cubs, the 27-year-old decided that he's "going to be myself" and "going to steal bases." Brujan was a prolific base stealer in the minors and his sprint speed was in the 91st percentile in his rookie season with the Rays back in 2021. However, he went only 9-for-17 in stolen-base attempts over 99 regular-season games across three seasons with Tampa Bay, and last year with the Marlins his sprint speed was down in the 53rd percentile. Brujan is already 4-for-4 on stolen-base attempts this spring, so he's held true to his word so far, and he's also posted a 1.042 OPS. That said, if the career .189/.261/.270 hitter doesn't improve at the plate, his intentions on the bases could be irrelevant. Brujan is aiming to win a utility role with Chicago this season.

The Cubs acquired Brujan from the Marlins on Sunday in exchange for first baseman Matt Mervis, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Miami had designated Brujan for assignment last week, but the 26-year-old utility man will regain a 40-man roster spot with the move to Chicago. Once viewed as one of the top prospects in the Tampa Bay system during his time in the minors, Brujan has slashed a woeful .189/.261/.270 (50 wRC+) across 550 plate appearances in the majors with the Rays and Marlins over the last four seasons. Though the change of scenery could help get his development back on track, Brujan profiles as a bench bat at this stage of his career, with most of his value coming from his ability to play all over the infield and outfield.

Marlins' Vidal Brujan: Filling in for injured Edwards
Brujan will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Rockies.
Brujan will pick up a third consecutive start at shortstop in place of Xavier Edwards (back), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. The Marlins opted to call up an extra outfielder (Griffin Conine) from Triple-A Jacksonville rather than an infielder to replace Edwards on the active roster, so Brujan looks like he could have a clear path to a full-time role while Edwards is on the shelf. Brujan flashed an interesting blend of power and speed during his time in the minors, but he's produced an underwhelming .638 OPS over 259 plate appearances with Miami this season and hasn't been efficient on the basepaths (five stolen bases in 10 attempts) either.
