After a standout 2023, Camilo Doval took major steps backwards last season. His 14.4 percent walk rate was second worst among relief pitchers, which attributed to inflated ratios (4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) and an eventual demotion from closing duties. Doval was even optioned to the minors for a few weeks, but the 27-year-old still led San Francisco with 23 saves (T-10th in the league) and a 63.9 percent team save share that ranked 13th among closers. The only thing working for Doval was his slider (.184 BAA, 45 percent whiff rate), and he threw the pitch more than 50 percent of the time. Unfortunately, his cutter (.284 BAA, .552 SLG) and sinker (.375 BAA, .531 SLG) got crushed, the latter regressing significantly since its introduction in 2022. Doval should give Ryan Walker competition for the closer role during spring training. Improving his command would go a long way towards reclaiming at least a share of the role he once held.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Struggles with control Monday

Doval (1-1) was charged with the loss Monday, allowing two earned runs on no hits and a walk across one-third of an inning during San Francisco's 2-0 loss to the Reds. He also hit one batter. Doval walked the first batter he faced before hitting the second. Both runners came around to score after the right-handed reliever was pulled. The 27-year-old faced three hitters Monday, throwing only three strikes across 11 pitches. Doval has given up all three of his earned runs in the Giants' last two games, logging a 5.06 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 2:3 K:BB over 5.1 frames in six appearances.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Earns win after blown save

Doval (1-0) allowed a run on two hits and two walks in one inning Sunday while picking up a win against Seattle. He did not record a strikeout and was charged with a blown save. Doval was tagged with a blown save in back-to-back games, but this time he earned a win after the Giants walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning. He coughed up an RBI double to Randy Arozarena in the top of the frame to tie the contest. Ryan Walker was seemingly unavailable Sunday after pitching Friday and Saturday. Doval owns a 1.80 ERA through five innings, but he has struck out only two batters.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Secures second save of 2025

Doval earned the save in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Astros, pitching a scoreless inning with no strikeouts. Doval induced three consecutive outs in just 10 pitches during the ninth frame, securing his second save in three appearances this season. The right-hander has yet to allow a hit across three innings in the 2025 campaign, recording a strikeout and no walks. Ryan Walker took over the closing role due to Doval's struggles in the middle of last season, and while Walker will likely continue to receive the bulk of the ninth-inning work, Doval should still remain a key part of the back-end mix in San Francisco.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Earns first save

Doval earned the save in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Reds, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning. With closer Ryan Walker sidelined by back tightness, Doval stepped in and locked down the save on just 11 pitches. If Walker remains unavailable, the 27-year-old Doval's experience in the role should give him the edge to handle the team's save opportunities moving forward.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Avoids arbitration

The Giants and Doval avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.525 million contract Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Doval was eligible for arbitration for the first time. The 27-year-old lost his closer job and was sent to the minors for a while in 2024, finishing with a 4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 78:39 K:BB over 59 frames. However, Doval still boasts nasty stuff and should be a high-leverage arm again for the Giants in 2025 if he can throw enough strikes.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Expected back on road trip

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that he expects Doval to be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento sometime during the team's Aug. 23-29 road trip, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. What role Doval would fill has not yet been determined, as Ryan Walker has been excellent since taking over the closer role. Since being demoted to Sacramento, Doval has allowed two runs with a 5:1 K:BB over four innings of work. Just one free pass is encouraging to see, as Doval's 13.3 percent walk rate was a major reason why the Giants opted to send him down. When the former closer does rejoin the big-league bullpen, he could work in low-leverage spots initially.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Blows fifth save

Doval (4-1) was credited with the win and charged with a blown save Thursday, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks over one inning against the Nationals. He did not record a strikeout. Doval entered the ninth with a three-run lead but walked two batters which set up Luis Garcia's two-out, two-strike homer to left that tied the game. It was the fifth blown save of the season for Doval, who was then bailed out when the Giants scored four in the top of the 10th to provide him with his fourth win. Doval is now 4-1 with 22 saves on the season, though the three runs allowed lifted his ERA from 4.29 to 4.70 to go along with a 1.61 WHIP and 56 strikeouts over 44 innings.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Escapes with 22nd save

Doval gave up a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 22nd save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Nationals. The right-hander got into trouble by loading the bases with one out, but Doval coaxed a double-play grounder out of Alex Call to end the game. The Giants' closer has been shaky of late, posting a 5.68 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB in 6.1 innings over his last seven appearances, but he's still managed to successfully convert his last five save chances.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Grabs 19th save

Doval allowed one hit in a scoreless inning while striking out one to earn a save over Colorado on Saturday. Doval entered with a three-run lead in the ninth and saw the tying run come up to the plate, but he managed to come out unscathed for the save. It was Doval's 19th save in his 23rd opportunity, a far cry from his league-leading 39 saves last season. The 27-year-old has a 4.28 ERA through 40 innings, but a high walk total has led to a 1.60 WHIP thus far.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Notches 18th save

Doval issued one walk in a scoreless inning while striking out two batters to earn a save over Colorado on Sunday. Doval made his first appearance since blowing a save in his final outing before the All-Star break. This time, he worked around a two-out walk to secure the 3-2 win. Doval has converted 18 of his 22 save chances, but he's blown two of the last six. He lowered his ERA to 4.26 alongside a 51:25 K:BB through 40 appearances.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Blows save Sunday

Doval allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one over one-third of an inning, taking a blown save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Twins. Doval's poor performance didn't stop the Giants from winning, but it made things a bit hairy in the ninth inning. The closer had gone five scoreless innings since his last blown save June 28, though he continues to put too many batters on base. For the season, Doval has a 4.38 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 49:24 K:BB over 37 innings while going 17-for-21 in save chances. If manager Bob Melvin changes his approach to the closer job, Doval could lose some of his save share to Ryan Walker or Tyler Rogers.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Escapes with save

Doval allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning Friday, striking out one and earning a save over Cleveland. Doval put the first two batters of the inning on base but escaped the jam to close out the 4-2 win. It was his third straight save conversion, and he's now 17 for 20 in opportunities this season. Doval has not looked like his usual self, however, as his current ERA and WHIP of 4.04 and 1.54, respectively, are both career highs.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Secures 14th save

Doval picked up the save over the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing one hit over a scoreless ninth inning while striking out one. Doval entered the contest with a one-run lead in the ninth and surrendered a leadoff single to Dansby Swanson before retiring the next three batters in succession to secure his 14th save of the campaign. The right-hander has now converted each of his last five save attempts and has allowed only one baserunner over his last three appearances. Doval has also posted at least one strikeout in three consecutive outings.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Picks up ninth save

Doval gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in the ninth inning Friday to record his ninth save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Mets. The Giants scored six of their runs in the eighth and ninth innings to create the save chance, but Doval very nearly squandered it following a leadoff double by pinch hitter DJ Stewart and a fielding error by Marco Luciano. It was the first earned run the right-hander has allowed since May 8 at Coors Field, and on the season Doval carries a 3.05 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB through 20.2 innings while converting nine of 10 save opportunities.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Blows first save

Doval gave up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday to blow his first save of the season in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Pirates. He struck out one. The Giants rolled into the ninth inning with a 6-2 lead, but after Luke Jackson put two runners aboard with one out, Doval got the call and coaxed a potential double-play grounder from Andrew McCutchen, only for Marco Luciano to boot it and pave the way for a Pirates rally. Doval's control has taken a step backward this season, as he has a 15.7 percent walk rate compared to a 9.3 percent mark in 2023, but he still carries a 2.89 ERA to go with his 1.45 WHIP, 25:13 K:BB through 18.2 innings and eight saves.

Doval faced the heart of Miami's lineup but needed just 13 pitches to retire the side in order for his third save of the year. The right-hander gave up two runs in his first outing of the season, but he has followed up with four straight scoreless appearances and has an 8:1 K:BB during that stretch.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Earns four-out save

Doval picked up the save Monday, allowing one hit and no walks with two strikeouts across 1.1 scoreless innings. Doval retired four of the five batters he faced Monday to earn his second save of the campaign. After racking up 39 saves a season ago, Doval has only seen two save chances and has only made four appearances this far. However, he'll likely have opportunities to enhance those numbers with two more games coming against the 3-14 Marlins and a four-game series against the Diamondbacks left this week.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Collects first win

Doval (1-0) picked up the win Friday, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning during a 3-2 victory over the Padres. The Giants' closer came on in a 2-2 tie at home, so he had no chance at a save, but Doval took care of business in the top of the ninth and got rewarded when Thairo Estrada walked it off with a double in the bottom of the frame. After racking up 66 saves over the prior two seasons, Doval is still looking for his first save of 2024.
