Hernandez elected to become a free agent after being pushed off the Dodgers' 40-man roster, and he'll now look to carve out a role for himself in Milwaukee. The 29-year-old righty has given up nine runs in 9.2 innings this season. He worked primarily as a reliever during his brief stint with the Dodgers, but he will likely serve as a starter for a Brewers team that has dealt with a plethora of injuries to its rotation. The Dodgers outrighted Hernandez to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday after he cleared waivers, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
Hernandez was removed from the Dodgers' 40-man roster last week after he allowed nine earned runs across 9.2 innings. The 29-year-old remains in the organization, however, and is likely to re-enter Oklahoma City's rotation.

The 29-year-old will be pushed off the Dodgers' roster in order to make room for Evan Phillips (hamstring), who was reinstated from the IL in a corresponding move. Hernandez struggled after joining the big-league club May 15, allowing nine earned runs in just 9.2 innings of work. Hernandez gave up two earned runs on two hits over an inning of relief in Monday's 6-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Hernandez ended up starting in the Dodgers' series finale in San Francisco, covering six innings while giving up three earned runs in a losing effort. With an off day coming up Thursday, the Dodgers weren't in need of an additional starter this week, so Hernandez shifted to the bullpen. Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Promoted, starting Wednesday
The Dodgers selected Hernandez's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and he's starting Wednesday's game against the Giants, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
The right-hander signed with the Dodgers as a non-roster invitee during the offseason and will now receive his first look with the big-league club. Hernandez has covered at least five frames in each of his previous five starts at Triple-A and posted a 2.45 ERA during that stretch, but he may not last that long Wednesday with Los Angeles expected to have a bullpen game. Ryan Yarbrough and Eduardo Salazar -- who also was promoted Wednesday -- are also in the mix to see bulk innings.

Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Takes loss in quality start
Hernandez (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Giants, covering six innings and striking out three while allowing three earned runs on four hits and one walk.
After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day, Hernandez held his own in his first start with the Dodgers, retiring seven of the first nine batters he faced before being tagged for two runs on a Mike Yastrzemski home run in the bottom of the third. The right-hander would allow another run on a Heliot Ramos double in the sixth but was still able to get through the frame and log a quality start in his debut. Hernandez produced 10 swinging strikes on the night and certainly made a case for more innings at the big-league level, though manager Dave Roberts said after the game that the right-hander will serve as a long-relief option out of the bullpen in the near term, per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports.

Dodgers' Elieser Hernandez: Doesn't make Opening Day roster
The Dodgers have reassigned Hernandez to minor-league camp, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with Los Angeles in January and pitched in four Cactus League contests. He struggled during his time on the mound this spring, giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. Hernandez has had some success as a major-league starter in the past -- most notably in 2020 with Miami, when he posted a 3.16 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 34:5 K:BB over 25.2 frames -- but he was injured almost all of last year and logged only 9.1 minor-league innings. He'll presumably open the coming campaign in Triple-A and work toward trying to prove both his health and effectiveness.

Hernandez is back to full health again after he had spent the entire season on the IL, first while recovering from a shoulder injury before he had his rehab program slowed by side discomfort in June. The Mets don't have an opening for Hernandez in the big-league bullpen at the moment, so while he'll reclaim his spot on the 40-man roster now that he's been activated, he'll head to Triple-A to continue building his case for a promotion. During his rehab assignment, Hernandez posted a 2.45 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB over 7.1 innings across six appearances between High-A Brooklyn and Single-A St. Lucie.

Hernandez, who has resided on the injured list all season with a right shoulder strain, has now made three rehab appearances in the Florida State League, recording no more than four outs and throwing no more than 20 pitches in any of those outings. The 28-year-old's light usage would seem to suggest that the Mets envision him filling in a relief role once he's activated from the 60-day IL, even though Hernandez has mostly operated as a starter over parts of five seasons in the majors.
