Player Outlook
Tyler Holton didn't make Detroit's Opening Day roster, but he was recalled early in the season despite opening with a few rough outings for Triple-A Toledo (4 HR allowed over 7.2 innings). The southpaw ended up being one of the league's most pleasant surprises, leading qualified relievers with 85.1 innings while ranking 2nd with a 0.87 WHIP. The bulk reliever mixed six pitches effectively, including a new slider (.135 BA) that he threw almost exclusively to left-handed batters. Holton's 91.5 mph 4-seamer didn't blow away hitters and his 22.8% strikeout rate was below average, but he didn't issue many free passes either. In fact, his 5.3% walk rate was T-10th among qualified relievers. However, some ratio regression should be expected in 2024, as Holton's 2.11 ERA didn't sync up with his 3.55 FIP or 3.60 SIERA. Expect the Tigers to deploy the left-hander in a similar capacity this season.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Records another save

Holton worked around a hit to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and earn the save in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Padres. Holton has been seeing more save opportunities lately, as this was his third since Aug. 26, and he now has seven saves for the season. Jason Foley leads the team with 20 saves, but Holton has clearly emerged as a co-closing option in Detroit. The lefty's fantasy stock appears to be on the rise.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Records save Saturday

Holton worked around a walk to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and earn the save in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Red Sox. Holton followed starter Tarik Skubal, who dazzled across eight innings. The Detroit reliever kept things up and earned his sixth save of the season. Presumptive top closer Jason Foley was likely available, as he last pitched on Wednesday, but the Tigers turned to Holton to face the top of Boston's lineup. That meant matchups with left-handed batters Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers, so perhaps that favored the southpaw Holton. Either way, he's firmly in the mix for saves in Detroit, and he's earned the opportunity with a strong 2.44 ERA and 0.83 WHIP across 77.1 innings this season.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Working as opener Thursday

Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher for Thursday's game against the Cubs, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Holton has covered as much as 3.1 innings this season, but because he tossed 1.2 innings and 20 pitches in Wednesday's 8-2 win, manager A.J. Hinch isn't likely to ask the lefty to cover more than the opening frame or two. Kenta Maeda is available on six days' rest and should serve as the Tigers' bulk reliever.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Covers three innings for hold

Holton tossed three scoreless innings to earn a hold in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Yankees. He allowed one hit and struck out two. After starter Keider Montero covered five scoreless innings, Holton preserved Detroit's lead in the sixth, seventh and eighth to earn his ninth hold of the season. The lefty has emerged as the team's most reliable reliever this year, posting a sparkling 2.55 ERA and 0.83 WHIP across 70.2 innings. Among Detroit players who have primarily worked out of the bullpen this season, he leads the team in innings. Holton should remain a trusted relief option moving forward.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Serving as opener Saturday

Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Saturday's game against the Royals, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Saturday will mark the fifth time this season that Holton has drawn the opener assignment. In his last appearance as an opener against the Guardians on Tuesday, Holton threw 2.2 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while striking out one batter. Joey Wentz worked an inning of relief in Friday's contest against Kansas City, so Kenta Maeda appears most likely serve in bulk relief, as he did July 28 against the Twins, once Holton is done for the day.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Serving as opener Thursday

Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Thursday's game in Cleveland, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Kenta Maeda is likely to follow Holton in bulk relief. Holton is serving as an opener for the third time this season after yielding one run over 3.1 innings in the first two appearances.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Starting bullpen game

Holton will start Tuesday's game against the Guardians, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Holton will be the first reliever to take the mound for the Tigers during what's slated to be a bullpen game. The 28-year-old isn't likely to work more than three innings before handing the ball off.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Records win Monday

Holton (4-1) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Monday's 1-0 victory over the Guardians. After Detroit starter Keider Montero was lights out through 6.1 innings, Holton got the call to get the last two outs of the seventh with a runner on and the game tied 0-0. The lefty escaped the frame, then breezed through the top of the eighth before snagging the win when the Tigers scored once in the bottom of the inning. After a dominant 2023 campaign in which he posted a 2.11 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 85.1 innings, Holton has taken a slight step back in 2024, though he's still been very solid with a 3.64 ERA and identical 0.87 WHIP. The ratios alone give him some fantasy appeal, though his value would increase if he slid into the closer role at some point. It was Shelby Miller who earned his first save of the season after Holton exited the game Monday.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Logs two scoreless innings Sunday

Holton tossed two scoreless innings of relief in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Astros. He struck out one. Holton continued his strong June, as he now has a 1.00 ERA and 0.44 WHIP across nine innings this month. For the season, the lefty has a solid 3.58 ERA and 0.74 WHIP across 37.2 innings. That's on top of the excellent 2.11 ERA and 0.87 WHIP he registered across 85.1 innings in 2023. Holton isn't seeing regular save opportunities yet, though he has established himself as a trusted member of the Detroit bullpen, and he could push for a larger role if he continues to pitch well.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Collects first save of season

Holton gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. Jason Foley was brought on in the eighth inning to face Vladimir Guerrero, Bo Bichette and George Springer, leaving Holton to handle the bottom of Toronto's order. The southpaw gave up a double to Isiah Kiner-Falefa but otherwise had little trouble. With Alex Lange sent down to Triple-A on Thursday, there's a vacancy in Detroit's high-leverage crew, and Holton might be the guy to fill it. Through 18 appearances this season, he sports a 3.76 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB over 26.1 innings with three wins and two holds in addition to Saturday's save.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Earns third win

Holton (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Tuesday against the Guardians. He allowed two hits and struck out three. Detroit starter Kenta Maeda struggled in this one, allowing seven runs across only two innings of work, which forced Holton into the game in the third. The lefty pitched much better, however, and he managed to snag his third win as the Tigers poured on the offense in the 11-7 victory. Holton has been mostly good this season outside of allowing five runs while retiring just one batter back on April 26. He'll continue to serve as a long-relief option out of Detroit's bullpen.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Snags second win

Holton (2-0) allowed a run on a hit and a walk but managed to earn the win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. Spot starter Matt Manning only covered 4.2 innings, so Holton walked into a win by coming out of the bullpen first in the 11-6 victory. While the 2-0 record is nice, the lefty has been uneven with a 5.40 ERA so far, and he's already allowed three home runs across 13.1 innings after surrendering only nine long balls in 85.1 innings last season. Holton posted a strong 2.11 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 2023 as well, so if he can keep the ball in the yard moving forward, he figures to find a bit more success.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Continues to pitch well

Holton pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets. He allowed a hit and struck out one. Holton has now logged 4.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts across three appearances to begin the season. The lefty doesn't seem like a top option for save chances at the moment, but it is a fluid Detroit bullpen, with Alex Lange, Jason Foley, Shelby Miller and Andrew Chafin all seemingly in the mix to close out games. For now, Holton looks like a strong setup option who could be a decent source of holds.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Looks better Saturday

Holton pitched a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, lowering his spring ERA to 4.50. Holton had allowed runs in each of his last two spring appearances, but he was sharper Saturday. The lefty now has four strikeouts across four Grapefruit League innings to go along with a 0.75 WHIP. Holton emerged as a key weapon for the Tigers in 2023, posting a 2.11 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 74 strikeouts across 85.1 innings, working primarily as a long reliever. The southpaw will likely serve in a similar capacity this year, and while he may vulture a few wins, his fantasy value figures to be inconsistent coming out of the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Handles bulk role

Holton allowed a run on two hits and struck out two without walking a batter over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Tuesday. Alex Faedo (finger) was initially lined up for bulk innings Tuesday, but he was placed on the injured list. Holton did a decent job in his longest outing of the season, limiting the damage to J.D. Martinez's fourth-inning solo home run. Holton has pitched well this year with a 2.13 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 70:17 K:BB through 80.1 innings over 55 appearances (one start). He could continue to be an option as a bulk reliever over the final two weeks of the season.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Opening Thursday's game

Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher for Thursday's game in Philadelphia, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Reese Olson had been on tap to start Wednesday before the game was postponed due to air quality conditions. The Tigers haven't indicated that Olson won't pitch Thursday, so it's possible that he or Garrett Hill will function as a bulk reliever. The 26-year-old Holton has yet to make an MLB start, and he was used exclusively in relief over 21 appearances between the Tigers and Triple-A this season. He hasn't covered more than three innings in any of those outings, so Holton seems unlikely to work deep enough into his start Thursday to qualify for a win before he turns the game over to the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Delivers two scoreless innings

Holton allowed two hits while striking out two over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Phillies. Horton has been solid of late for the Tigers, pitching to a 1.76 ERA over his last eight appearances (15.1 innings). The rookie left-hander lowered his ERA to 2.32 with a 0.94 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB through 31 innings this season while earning more high-leverage work in Detroit.

  • Tigers' Tyler Holton: Recalled from Triple-A

Holton was recalled Saturday from Triple-A Toledo. Holton will join the Tigers' bullpen ahead of Saturday's game against the Giants. He figures to operate in middle relief. He's struggled through 7.2 innings with Toledo so far, allowing four home runs and posting a 7:3 K:BB.

  • Diamondbacks' Tyler Holton: Removed from 40-man roster

Holton was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. As a result of the team officially signing Andrew Chafin, Holton was removed from the 40-man roster. The left-hander will now either get claimed by another team, be released outright or remain with Triple-A Reno, the last of which seems the most likely. Overall, Holton appeared in 10 games with the Diamondbacks in 2022, allowing three runs over nine innings while recording six strikeouts.

  • Diamondbacks' Tyler Holton: Recalled Saturday

Holton was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Saturday. Holton has spent most of the season in Reno and has recorded a 3.29 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 27.1 innings over 18 relief appearances in the minors. The southpaw should pitch mainly in low-leverage situations but will be able to handle multi-inning outings if needed.
