Gonsolin (back) will begin the season on the injured list, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Gonsolin recently injured his back while lifting, and manager Dave Roberts confirmed Tuesday that the right-hander won't be ready for the regular season. Dustin May will claim the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation as a result, and there's no guarantee Gonsolin will automatically claim that spot once he's healthy.... See More ... See Less

Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Dealing with back issue
Gonsolin has been dealing with a minor back injury suffered while lifting, Dodgers Territory reports. Skipper Dave Roberts cited the back issue as the reason Gonsolin won't have enough time to ramp all the way up in spring training. As a result, Roberts stated that Dustin May makes the most sense to open the regular season as the team's fifth starter. Gonsolin still has one minor-league option remaining, though the club would more likely elect to deploy the right-hander out of the bullpen, assuming the decision is to roll with May at the back end of the starting rotation.... Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Looking good in exhibition play
Gonsolin has pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three batters, over two appearances in Cactus League play. Gonsolin missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he appears back to full health this spring. The right-hander was super efficient in his most recent appearance Wednesday, needing just 13 pitches -- all of which were strikes -- to retire six batters. Gonsolin is a candidate to open the regular season as the Dodgers' fifth starter.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Starting second spring game
Gonsolin is scheduled to start Friday's Cactus League game against the Cubs, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Gonsolin didn't pitch for the Dodgers in 2024 while spending most of the season recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in September 2023, but he was cleared to make three rehab starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City this past September. Though he looked sharp at Triple-A, Gonsolin was never reinstated from the injured list during the Dodgers' run to the World Series, but that wasn't the result of him suffering any sort of setback. Despite having had a normal offseason in addition to owning a sterling 3.19 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 375.2 career innings in the big leagues, Gonsolin will have to fight for a spot in a talent-laden Dodgers rotation that added Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki this offseason and also has Shohei Ohtani and Dustin May returning from Tommy John surgery. The Dodgers plan to open the season with a traditional five-man rotation before going to a six-man setup once Ohtani is fully stretched out for starting duty -- perhaps at some point in May -- so Gonsolin will be competing with Sasaki, May, Bobby Miller (concussion), Landon Knack and Justin Wrobleski for one of two spots. Gonsolin has a minor-league option remaining, but since he's 30 years old and has a strong track record in the majors, he would likely work out of the big-league bullpen if he misses out on a rotation spot.... Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Five-man rotation pre-Ohtani
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Friday that the team plans to use a five-man rotation until Shohei Ohtani (shoulder/elbow) is ready to pitch, which would seemingly leave Gonsolin in a competition for one remaining spot, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Manager Dave Roberts recently suggested that Ohtani could be ready to make his season debut on the mound sometime in May, though there's no concrete timeline yet. The Dodgers will shift to a six-man rotation at that point, but until then they will use a traditional five-man setup. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki are locked into four of the spots, which leaves Gonsolin, Dustin May, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack, Justin Wrobleski, Ben Casparius and perhaps others competing for the final slot. Roberts said Friday that Gonsolin and May will be considered for the bullpen if they don't make the rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Likely to remain sidelined
Gonsolin (elbow) is likely to remain sidelined for the NLCS against the Mets, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports. Gonsolin ramped up to three innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City before the minor-league campaign ended, though he has yet to be active in the postseason. Manager Dave Roberts didn't rule him out formally, but Landon Knack looks likely to be the primary choice for long relief for the Dodgers in the NLCS.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Beginning rehab assignment
Gonsolin (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. It will be the right-hander's first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery in September of 2023. A return for Gonsolin before the end of the season has not been ruled out, but if it happens, he would be used in a relief role. The 30-year-old posted a 4.98 ERA over 20 starts for the Dodgers in 2023 prior to surgery.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Could return this season
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this week that the door is "slightly open" for Gonsolin (elbow) to pitch before the end of the season, per MLB.com. Gonsolin underwent Tommy John surgery Sept. 1 of last year, so he's almost one year removed from the procedure. The right-hander pitched three live batting-practice sessions earlier in August, during which his fastball sat at 92-to-94 mph -- the same range as his velocity prior to his injury. Gonsolin recently said he's optimistic about his ability to pitch in game action before the end of this season, though Roberts was more conservative in his assessment. If Gonsoin does make it back to the big club, he'll work out of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Set for Tommy John surgery
Gonsolin (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Friday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Gonsolin was ruled out for the rest of the 2023 campaign after being moved to the 60-day injured list Sunday, but news of Tommy John surgery likely means he'll miss most, if not the entirety of 2024. This is more disappointing news for the right-hander, who will finish the year with a 4.98 ERA over 103 frames after posting a 2.14 ERA across 130.1 innings a season ago.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Shifts to 60-day IL
The Dodgers transferred Gonsolin (forearm) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver-wire pickup Tyson Miller, but more significantly, it officially closes the door on Gonsolin pitching again in 2023, barring the Dodgers making a deep postseason run. Even if the Dodgers advance to the National League Championship Series or the World Series, Gonsolin is still unlikely to pitch again, given that he could require surgery to address his right elbow injury. Gonsolin recently underwent an MRI, and the Dodgers will await the results before making a decision regarding surgery. If a procedure is deemed necessary, Gonsolin's absence could stretch into the 2024 season.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Could require surgery
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Gonsolin (forearm) might require surgery, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. There's nothing official yet, but Gonsolin is not expected back this season, and a surgical procedure could affect his readiness for the beginning of the 2024 campaign. The 29-year-old right-hander landed on the injured list Aug. 19 due to right forearm discomfort, and an MRI taken earlier this week apparently revealed some form of structural damage.... See More ... Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Likely done for season
The Dodgers placed Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right forearm inflammation, Matthew Moreno of DodgerBlue.com reports. After officially announcing Gonsolin's move to the injured list, manager Dave Roberts stated that it is unlikely Gonsolin pitches again this season, per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports. The 29-year-old righty will get an MRI on his elbow next week, at which point the team will have a better idea of whether Gonsolin will be shut down for the year. Bryan Hudson was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Trip to injured list expected
Gonsolin has been pitching through an elbow issue but will likely require a trip to the injured list, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. The exact nature of Gonsolin's injury is unclear, but the issue helps explain his poor run of starts. He allowed 10 runs (including five homers) in 3.1 innings Friday against the Marlins, bringing his ERA over his last six starts to 8.01. The injury could mean Ryan Pepiot sticks around in the rotation after a spot start in Saturday's doubleheader, or it could open a path for Emmet Sheehan or Gavin Stone to get another chance.... Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Crushed in Friday's loss
Gonsolin (8-5) surrendered 10 runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out two over 3.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Marlins. Both starters struggled in this contest, but Gonsolin got caught with more traffic on the bases. He gave up a total of five homers in the contest, including three for multiple runs, in his worst outing of the season. This snapped a three-game winning streak for Gonsolin as well as the Dodgers' 11-game winning streak as a team. He's now at a 4.98 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB through 103 innings over 20 starts this year. Gonsolin has alternated good and bad outings over his last five turns, but he's projected for a tough road assignment in Boston his next time out.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Earns eighth win
Gonsolin (8-4) allowed a run on three hits and struck out six without walking a batter over six innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rockies. Gonsolin earned his third win in a row, rebounding from allowing six runs over six innings his last start. His lone mistake Saturday was an Ezequiel Tovar solo home run on the first pitch of the game. While Gonsolin has either been sharp or shaky with little in between, it's averaged out to a pedestrian 4.24 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 80:36 K:BB through 99.2 innings over 19 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Marlins.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Picks up sixth win
Gonsolin (6-4) allowed a run on five hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Athletics. While it was a soft matchup, it was still a positive to see Gonsolin end a three-start winless stretch. His lone mistake was a Shea Langeliers solo home run in the third inning -- that was the sixth homer Gonsolin has allowed over his last five starts. The right-hander now has a 4.11 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 71:35 K:BB through 87.2 innings over 17 starts. He's projected for a road start in San Diego early next week.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Struggles continue against Jays
Gonsolin (5-4) took the loss Wednesday as the Dodgers fell 8-1 to the Blue Jays, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five. The right-hander continues to wilt in the summer heat. Gonsolin has been tagged for at least four runs in six of his last seven starts, stumbling to a 7,25 ERA over that stretch despite a superficially respectable 1.39 WHIP. The 29-year-old's 19.7 percent strikeout rate and 9.7 percent swinging strike rate on the season are career lows, as is his 92.6 mph average on his fastball, and Gonsolin could be tough to deploy even as a streaming option in the second half if he can't regain some of those lost whiffs. He's next set to take the mound at home next week against the A's.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Allows four runs
Gonsolin yielded four runs on two hits and three walks over five innings in Friday's win over Texas. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. Gonsolin allowed a two-run homer in the first inning and later gave up two more runs in the fourth. He's been tagged with at least four runs in five of his last six outings, spiking his ERA from 1.93 to 3.94 during that span. The six strikeouts were his highest total since June 18, but he's been taken deep four times in his last three starts. Gonsolin's next outing is currently lined up to come at home against Toronto next week.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Pulled after 54 pitches
Gonsolin allowed two hits and one run in a no-decision against the Mets on Saturday. He walked one batter and struck out three. Gonsolin gave up a deep solo blast to Brandon Nimmo in the fourth inning but otherwise kept the Mets off the scoreboard. It was curious, then, that he was pulled after the fifth frame having thrown just 54 pitches, but manager Dave Roberts clarified after the contest that the quick hook wasn't due to an injury. "You could see Tony kind of battling with the humidity, the feel of the baseball. When you're looking down at a fresh 'pen, for me it was a no-brainer on shortening him right there as far as pitch count," Roberts stated, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Ardaya adds that Gonsolin himself stated that he "couldn't get a good grip on the ball," so there doesn't seem to be any concern about the right-hander's health. Gonsolin should be good to go without restrictions for his next outing, which is lined up to be a tough matchup against the Rangers in Texas.... See More ... See Less -
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Notches fifth win
Gonsolin improved to 5-3 with a victory over the Angels on Friday during which he allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out five batters. Gonsolin was staked to a 4-0 lead through three innings before giving up a Mickey Moniak three-run homer in the fourth. The right-hander bounced back with a scoreless fifth and sixth, then surrendered a solo shot to Mike Moustakas in the seventh. Gonsolin finished having yielded exactly four runs for his third straight start, but this was the best outing of the bunch as he went a season-high 6.2 frames on an efficient 77 pitches (54 strikes). The 29-year-old heads into the All-Star break with a 3.86 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 54:26 K:BB over 67.2 innings on the campaign.... See More ... See Less
