Top Guardians News

  • Guardians' Lane Thomas: Held out again Tuesday

Thomas (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's game in Baltimore.

Thomas has now missed six straight starts while battling a bruised right wrist, although there's been no indication to this point that he will require a trip to the injured list. Angel Martinez will make a fourth straight start in center field Tuesday.

  • Guardians' Jhonkensy Noel: Starts against lefty

Noel started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a run scored in Sunday's 4-2 loss to Kansas City.

Noel, who as usual was in the lineup against a left-hander, singled and scored in the Guardians' two-run second inning. He's scored a run in four straight games. Noel isn't chasing as much as he did last season, but those better swing decisions have not resulted in improvement. Big Christmas is batting .188 through 13 games.

  • Guardians' Daniel Schneemann: Doubles, scores in loss

Schneemann went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Royals.

Schneemann was involved in a "little-league home run" in the second inning when his run-producing double led to an errant throw, allowing him to score. The double snapped an 0-for-15 run for Schneeman, who has just two hits and is batting .091.

  • Guardians' Ben Lively: Coughs up four runs

Lively (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against Kansas City.

Lively turned in three scoreless frames before Salvador Perez knocked a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Royals plated two more on Maikel Garcia's double in the fifth. Lively forced 12 swinging strikes on 93 total pitches in his longest start of the season. His ERA rose to 4.87 with a 16:7 K:BB through 20.1 innings. Lively is lined up to start in Pittsburgh next weekend.

  • Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Getting day off versus lefty

Manzardo is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

With the Royals sending southpaw Cole Ragans to the bump, Manzardo will head to the bench for just the second time through the Guardians' first 15 games. Jose Ramirez will get a day out of the infield and will serve as Cleveland's designated hitter in place of Manzardo, who is batting .125 with a 16.7 percent walk rate and 28.6 percent strikeout rate so far in April.

  • Guardians' Bo Naylor: Sitting against lefty

Naylor is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

Naylor will head to the bench along with fellow left-handed batters Nolan Jones and Kyle Manzardo while the Royals send southpaw Cole Ragans to the hill for the series finale. Austin Hedges will handle the catching duties for Cleveland.

  • Guardians' Nolan Jones: Idle against southpaw

Jones is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

With southpaw Cole Ragans taking the hill for Kansas City, Jones will exit the lineup for the second time in the series. The Guardians will deploy a starting outfield of Steven Kwan, Angel Martinez and Jhonkensy Noel from left to right.

  • Guardians' Lane Thomas: Remains out of lineup

Thomas (wrist) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.

Thomas is on the bench for the fifth game in a row due to a bruised right wrist, which he sustained when he was hit by a pitch in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the White Sox. With an off day looming Monday, the Guardians are hoping Thomas will be recovered for the team's three-game series in Baltimore that begins Tuesday. Angel Martinez will cover center field Sunday in Thomas' absence.

  • Guardians' Cade Smith: Earns fifth hold

Smith struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn a hold during Saturday's 6-3 win over Kansas City.

With the Guardians up 3-1, Smith opened the top of the eighth inning with the task of getting the lead to closer Emmanuel Clase. He made quick work of the Royals for his fifth hold, before Cleveland stretched the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Smith has allowed two unearned runs over eight outings, giving up three hits and three walks while striking out nine over 7.2 innings.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Remains in lineup

Martinez started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Royals.

Martinez started a second straight game in place of the injured Lane Thomas (wrist) and made an impact in both. Following Friday's three-hit performance, Martinez belted a bases-loaded, ground-rule double Saturday that increased Cleveland's lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Thomas day-to-day and the Guardians getting a mere .388 OPS (29th) out of their right fielders, there appears to be path to more at-bats for Martinez.

  • Guardians' Luis L. Ortiz: Strikes out 10 in win

Ortiz (1-2) earned the win against the Royals on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks with 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings.

Ortiz was a solo homer away from a spotless outing, racking up 16 whiffs on 100 pitches to earn his first win of the season. The 26-year-old owns a 6.06 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB across 16.1 innings, though much of the damage to his ratios stems from a seven-run outing March 31. He's slated to face his former team, the Pirates, in Pittsburgh next weekend.

  • Guardians' Gabriel Arias: Homers again in win

Arias went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and a walk in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Royals.

Arias got the Guardians on the board with an RBI single in the fourth inning and added a solo home run in the sixth. He entered the weekend mired in an 0-for-17 slump but has since broken out in a big way, going 5-for-7 with two long balls. On the season, the 25-year-old is hitting .286 with three homers, seven RBI and six runs scored across 48 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Slade Cecconi: Faces hitters

Cecconi (oblique) threw live batting practice Saturday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Cecconi suffered a left oblique strain in mid-March, and he began throwing bullpen sessions at the beginning of April. Now that he's been cleared to face live hitters, he appears to be on the verge of starting up a minor-league rehab assignment, though the Guardians have yet to confirm such plans.

  • Guardians' Lane Thomas: Sitting fourth straight

Thomas (wrist) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Royals, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Saturday will be the fourth straight game that Thomas has sat out since getting hit on the wrist by a pitch Tuesday. There are currently no plans in place to put him on the injured list, though that may change if he's unable to take the field soon. Angel Martinez will start in center field Saturday and bat seventh.

  • Guardians' Tim Herrin: Earns second win

Herrin (2-0) allowed one hit over 1.1 innings to pick up the win in Friday's 7-0 victory over the Royals.

Starter Tanner Bibee was pulled after giving up a fourth walk and with Cleveland leading, 3-0, in the fifth inning, paving the way for Herrin to vulture the win. The reliever has two wins and two holds over six appearances, allowing one run while striking out five over five innings. Herrin shined for the Guardians in 2024, posting a 1.92 ERA over 75 regular-season appearances (fifth in MLB). The lefty typically pitches when the Guardians are leading and/or to get out of trouble created by another pitcher.
