What matters: The Chiefs have to be an emotionally-drained team after the week that they have experienced. Last Sunday they somehow came together a day after Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and then killed himself. This week they have had to deal with services and question after question about the tragedy. Will they come out as a tired football team? Or will they play motivated, as they did last Sunday?
Who matters: Brady Quinn. Last week was the first time all season that the Chiefs have had a quarterball really shine. Before the Carolina game, only one time had a Kansas City quarterback thrown more touchdown passes in a game than interceptions. Quinn was reliable and accurate, completing 19 of 23 passes for 201 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He will start against Cleveland for the first time since the team traded him to Denver in 2010. Asking him to duplicate last week's performance might be a little much, but if he can make enough throws to keep the chains moving and keep the defense honest to open up the running game for Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs should be able to move the ball against a defense that ranks 24th against the pass.
Key matchups: Cleveland WR Josh Gordon vs. Kansas City cornerbacks. The Chiefs are thin in the secondary with Brandon Flowers possibly out with a hamstring as well as both starting safeties questionable for Sunday's game. The Browns have one of the top pass-blocking offensive lines in the NFL, which gives Brandon Weeden plenty of time to throw. Gordon is Weeden's favorite deep threat and one player the Chiefs' safeties will need to provide help on when Weeden is given time to throw. Travis Daniels along with undrafted rookie Tysyn Hartman would likely start at the safety positions, as Eric Berry's backup Abram Elam is also injured right now. ... Kansas City WR Dwayne Bowe vs. Cleveland CB Joe Haden. Bowe has yet to catch a touchdown from Quinn and his production has dropped since Quinn took over at quarterback. The two did have their best week together last Sunday as Quinn found Bowe four times for 64 yards. Haden has played in only seven games this season but he's tied for the team lead with three interceptions.
Injuries of note: LB Derrick Johnson (hamstring) and Flowers (hamstring) have not been practicing this week, but coach Romeo Crennel said they might try to see what they could do on Friday. C Ryan Lilja (knee), Berry (hand), S Kendrick Lewis (shoulder), LT Branden Albert (back) and OLB Tamba Hali (knee) were all limited on Friday. Every injured player is questionable as Crennel has not ruled anyone out.
Inside stuff: If one player has been impacted the most by the deaths of Belcher and girlfriend Kasandra Perkins, it is Charles, who is married to Perkins' cousin. Belcher and Perkins met through Charles and his wife, Whitney.
Connections: Quinn was drafted by the Browns in 2007 and played three seasons in Cleveland. He was traded for current Kansas City RB Peyton Hillis, who spent the previous two seasons in Cleveland. AlCrennel was the head coach and his current offensive coordinator Brian Daboll had the same role in Cleveland in 2009 and 2010. GM Scott Pioli worked in Cleveland from 1992-95 in the Browns personnel department.
Stat you should know: The Chiefs were a very giving team through the first eight games of the season with a turnover ratio of minus-20. In the last four weeks, however, Kansas City has only one more giveaway than takeaway.
Prediction: Browns 27, Chiefs 17
