    Caesar’s / MGM. Carlos Rodon returned from yet another in season injury to throw 66 pitches five days ago against the Orioles. It’s hard to see the Yankees pushing the oft-injured pitcher more than five innings (80-85 pitches) in this one, especially against a Blue Jays lineup he’s struggled against.

    Analysis

    Shota Imanaga’s off-speed pitches rank in the 92nd percentile for run value, making him a tough challenge for the Mariners. Seattle has struggled all season against off-speed offerings, ranking 27th in MLB in that area. They also have the third-lowest team slugging percentage at .375 and an 88 wRC+ versus left-handed pitching. When Bryce Miller starts, the Mariners are just 4-11, and he’s been going through a rough patch—posting an 8.04 ERA in August and a 7.18 ERA over the last 30 days. With all this in mind, my model sees the Cubs as the stronger value, with a fair price closer to -125. I’m backing the Cubs here as they look to avoid the sweep.

    Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr was named the starter Tuesday in Bobby Petrino's new UNC offense, and all I ask of the senior is that he works on not turning the ball over. It may sound like a simple task, but the QB position at North Carolina turned the ball over too much last season. If they actually score on offense, that will be a bonus, and Bill Belichick's defense will handle the rest. The defense isn't the problem; it should be the star of the team. They just need the offense to stay patient and, once in a while, make some noise with a couple of scores. I'm betting Belichick slows the game down in Ireland and stays close with the chance to win.

    Analysis

    San Jose State went 3-9 last year, with the worst performances in their last three games. Coach Ken Niumatalolo only had two starters return, and they're both offensive linemen. Now he's got to face a USC team in the opener that is loaded this season, with nine starters back on offense, including senior quarterback Jayden Maiava, and five on defense. They have all five starters on the offensive line returning, and that's the biggest component I look at in these opening games. The cohesion is gonna be there, and apparently the boosters money is also there, as they had the No. 1 recruiting class in college football. I think USC could be the next Indiana this year. USC shows off for the nation.

    Analysis

    This game was moved from Brazil to Virginia, and the line jumped 2 points. I think that's a bit of an overreaction. I have these teams rated pretty close, and UVA doesn't have a huge home-field edge. I also think the Cavs are a bit overvalued coming off a 11-3 season. NC State is replacing a lot of production, but I think the Wolfpack have a more talented roster and are an interesting team in the ACC. Also, keep an eye on NC State QB CJ Bailey. He closed last season strong and could take a big step forward as a junior. I see this game going down to the wire, so I'll take the 5.5.
