  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Gives up walk-off homer

Jansen (0-2) allowed two runs on a hit and a walk while failing to record an out, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Padres. Jansen walked Elias Diaz and gave up a walk-off home run to Fernando Tatis in the ninth inning. This was not a save situation, as the game was tied when Jansen took the mound. Over five appearances in May, he's allowed eight runs across three innings while taking both of his losses on the year. Those two outings are the only ones in which he's been scored upon, but they have him at an unsightly 6.55 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB over 11 innings. He's still 7-for-7 in save chances, and he'll likely keep the closer role if he can avoid melting down in save situations.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Makes appearance in loss

Jansen allowed one hit in a scoreless two-thirds of an inning during Friday's 4-1 loss to the Orioles. He did not record a strikeout or a walk. Jansen entered in the top of the ninth with the Angels facing a three-run deficit and got some work in after battling an illness earlier this week. This was his first appearance since May 3. With his ailment seemingly in the rearview mirror, Jansen should soon add to his total of 454 career saves (fourth all time).

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Fighting off illness

Jansen was unavailable for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays due to an illness, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Jansen hasn't pitched since he collected his seventh save of the season Saturday. Manager Ron Washington said after Tuesday's game that the veteran reliever should be available out of the bullpen in Wednesday's contest, though that will ultimately depend on how the right-hander is feeling. Jansen owns a 5.79 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 9.1 innings on the season, though all the runs scored against him came during a six-run barrage from the Tigers on Friday.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Secures save No. 7

Jansen retired the only two batters he faced in Saturday's win against the Tigers to earn his seventh save of the season. The 37-year-old wasn't expected to be needed Saturday since the Angels entered the ninth inning leading 5-1, but Brock Burke was unable to finish things out and created a save situation. Jansen's previous appearance Thursday was a disaster as he gave up six runs on three homers in a non-save situation, but that's the only time in 10 outings this season he's been charged with a run. His 5.79 ERA and 1.39 WHIP are inflated due to that stumble, but Jansen has a 9:2 K:BB while converting all seven of his save chances this year.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Melts down in non-save spot

Jansen (0-1) took the loss Friday, surrendering six runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- in two-thirds of an inning as the Angels fell 9-1 to the Tigers. He struck out one. Called upon in the ninth inning to keep the game level at 1-1, Jansen instead watched Riley Greene launch his third pitch into the right-field corner for a leadoff homer, followed quickly by another solo shot from Colt Keith and a two-run blast by Javier Baez. The veteran closer put two more runners aboard before getting the hook, and both of them came around to score with Jake Eder on the mound. Jansen still has yet to blow a save this season, going 6-for-6 in save chances, and he hadn't given up a run in eight appearances prior to Friday's disaster.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Notches fifth save

Jansen worked a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his fifth save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Giants. He didn't walk or strike out a batter. Three flyball outs got the job done for Jansen, who has begun the season going 5-for-5 in converting save chances and has yet to give up a run in seven innings. While he could be a candidate to get flipped at the trade deadline if the Angels fall out of contention, that hasn't been a concern in the early going -- the Halos sit second in the AL West with a 10-9 record.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Grabs fourth save

Jansen earned the save in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Angels, allowing one hit while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. Jansen worked around a one-out single to improve to 4-for-4 in save chances this year. It's been a nice start to the season for the 37-year-old closer -- Jansen has delivered six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven in that span.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Secures second save

Jansen picked up the save in Sunday's 3-2 win against the White Sox, pitching a scoreless inning with no strikeouts while allowing a hit and a walk. The 37-year-old collected his 449th career save, working around a double and a walk before inducing a game-ending double play. Despite debuting late in spring training March 1 due to lingering shoulder soreness, Jansen appears to be in classic form, as he now needs just 30 more saves to pass Lee Smith for third most all-time. Jansen is firmly planted in his role as the Angels' closer and could be a trade deadline target if the team fades out of contention.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Locks down first save with Halos

Jansen walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 1-0 win over the White Sox. The veteran closer fired 11 of 19 pitches for strikes as he picked up his first save as an Angel. Jansen topped out at 94.9 mph with his cutter Saturday, but weak contact rather than elite velocity has always been his calling card. Jansen needs 30 more saves to tie Hall of Famer Lee Smith for third on the all-time list with 478, but it's a mark he hasn't reached in a season since 2022.

  • Angels' Kenley Jansen: Set for spring debut Saturday

Jansen (shoulder) will make his spring debut Saturday against the Athletics, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports Jansen ended the 2024 season on the shelf with shoulder inflammation, but it wasn't expected to be an issue that lingered into this year. He signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Angels earlier in February and should open the year in the closer role, with Ben Joyce learning from him. Jansen is 32 saves away from moving ahead of Lee Smith for third all time in MLB's career rankings.

  • Kenley Jansen: In talks with Toronto

The Blue Jays have had contract talks with Jansen (shoulder), Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital reports. It's unknown how advanced the discussions are at this juncture. The Blue Jays signed Yimi Garcia to a two-year, $15 million deal earlier this offseason, but Jansen would likely serve as Toronto's closer while Garcia is used in a setup role. Jansen ended the 2024 season on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, but he should be fully recovered for the start of spring training.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: IL move made official

The Red Sox placed Jansen on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder inflammation, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. The move was reported Sunday and now the transaction is official, which ends Jansen's season. Jansen has battled through a shoulder problem throughout this month, and since the Red Sox are out of the playoff hunt, they have opted to go ahead and shut him down. The Red Sox will turn to Chris Martin and Justin Slaten as closer options over the final week of the season. Jansen will be a free agent this offseason and has likely thrown his last pitch for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Set to go on IL

Manager Alex Cora told reporters Sunday that Jansen is likely to be placed on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a right shoulder injury, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Jansen has been battling through a nagging right shoulder issue over the past week, and the 36-year-old closer is set to be shut down for the rest of the regular season. Chris Martin and Justin Slaten will handle the closing duties for the final games of the regular season with Jansen sidelined. Jansen finishes his second year in Boston with 27 saves while registering a 3.35 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 61:20 K:BB across 53.2 innings, and he will be a free agent this offseason.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Returns with clean frame

Jansen (shoulder) threw a perfect ninth inning in Friday's extra-innings loss to the Twins. He did not record a strikeout. Jansen was said to be dealing with a shoulder issue earlier in the week, but he was available in his normal spot Friday and ended up retiring the side on 11 pitches (nine strikes). While the veteran's command and velocity have both been affected by the shoulder recently, there has been nothing to suggest the team will need to shut him down early, though that's not completely out of the question with Boston's playoff chances dwindling. Jansen is a free agent this winter.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Battling shoulder issue

Manager Alex Cora said after Wednesday's game versus Tampa Bay that Jansen is dealing with a shoulder injury, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Jansen struggled with command issues and decreased velocity during his outing Wednesday, which prompted a visit from Boston's training staff with two outs in the ninth inning. He was able to remain in the game and secure his 27th save of the season, but it's possible the Sox make the 36-year-old unavailable out of the bullpen over the next few days due to his shoulder.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Available Saturday

Manager Alex Cora said that Jansen (lat) is available to pitch in Saturday's game against the White Sox, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Jansen was unavailable Friday due to a lat issue and missed out on a save opportunity. However, he's feeling well enough to suit up and pitch Saturday as needed. Jansen has 25 saves and a 3.70 ERA across 48.2 innings this season.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Unavailable due to lat issue

Jansen indicated after Friday's game against the White Sox that he was unavailable to pitch due to a lat issue, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox had a save situation in Friday's game, but Josh Winckowski got the call in the ninth inning instead. Jansen didn't provide a specific timeline for his return, saying that he wouldn't pitch again until the issue is fully resolved. Winckowski appears to be the next man up as closer, but Chris Martin, Justin Slaten and even Liam Hendriks (elbow) might also be factors in the ninth depending on how long Jansen is unavailable.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Blows save but grabs win Friday

Jansen (4-2) blew the save but picked up the win in Friday's 7-5 extra-inning win over Detroit, allowing a run on two hits in the ninth. He struck out two. Called in to protect a one-run lead, Jansen gave up a leadoff single to Zach McKinstry before Jake Rogers laced a one-out double, tying the game at 4-4 and sticking Jansen with his fourth blown save this year. However, he'd wind up with the win after Boston responded with three runs in the top of the 10th. It's the first blown save in over a month for Jansen, who had allowed just two runs on two hits in his last 10 innings prior to Friday. The veteran closer has converted 25 of 29 save chances this year with a 2.98 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB across 48.1 innings.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Rebounds for 24th save

Jansen pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Astros. Jansen was on the hook for a walk-off loss Monday, but he had no trouble protecting a one-run lead one day later. He needed just 12 pitches (eight strikes) for the save Tuesday. The veteran closer has allowed just one run while striking out nine over seven innings in August. He's up to 24-for-27 in save chances while pitching to a 2.78 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 53:15 K:BB over 45.1 innings this season.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Secures 23rd save

Jansen picked up the save in Friday's 12-10 victory over Baltimore, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts. The veteran closer extended his scoreless appearances streak to five with this performance, retiring the side on a tidy 12 pitches. Jansen stands fourth all-time in career saves with 442, but he requires 37 more to pass Lee Smith for third place. After struggling in August with two blown saves and a 5.40 ERA over 10 innings, the Boston right-hander appears to have righted the ship and sports a 2.72 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 51:15 K:BB across 43 frames this season.
