  • Cardinals' Adam Kloffenstein: Optioned to Triple-A

Kloffenstein was optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Friday, John Denton of reports.

Kloffenstein earned a spot on the Cardinals' 40-man roster after registering an impressive 3.16 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 140:55 K:BB over 128 innings in 2023 between Double-A and Triple-A. If Kloffenstein is effective with Memphis early in the season, he could see some time in the majors in 2024.

  • Cardinals' Adam Kloffenstein: Added to 40-man

The Cardinals selected Kloffenstein to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Kloffenstein earned his way into the 40-man roster mix in St. Louis after pitching to a 3.16 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 140:55 K:BB over 128 innings this past season between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. The 23-year-old right-hander could be a consideration for the major-league rotation at some point in 2024.

  • Cardinals' Adam Kloffenstein: Dealt to St. Louis

The Blue Jays traded Kloffenstein and Sem Robberse to the Cardinals on Sunday in exchange for Jordan Hicks, Robert Murray of reports.

Kloffenstein put himself back on the prospect radar in 2023 with a 3.24 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 105:34 K:BB across 89 innings (17 starts) at the Double-A level, and the Cardinals apparently liked what they have seen. The 22-year-old could move up to Triple-A before the end of the season and may not be far off from the big leagues.

  • Blue Jays' Adam Kloffenstein: Back on prospect radar

Kloffenstein has a 2.31 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 46 strikeouts in 35 innings across seven starts for Double-A New Hampshire.

The 6-foot-5 righty was a prospect of note several years ago before logging a WHIP north of 1.55 in over 100 innings in both 2021 and 2022. However, at 22, Kloffenstein is age-appropriate for Double-A. He has been even more impressive over just his last five starts, during which he has a 1.29 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 28 innings. His sinker has topped out around 95 mph this year, so there may not be as much upside as his stats indicate, but Kloffenstein's 55.8 percent groundball rate is a strong mark, and he could someday pitch in the middle or back of a big-league rotation.
