  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Undergoes thumb operation

Alvarez (thumb) underwent surgery on his left thumb Tuesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a torn UCL in his left thumb and he will now officially begin the road to recovery. The Mets said Tuesday that the catcher is expected to miss eight weeks of action while recovering from the surgery, likely sidelining Alvarez until late June. In the meantime, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will continue to split the work behind the plate for New York.

Alvarez will get surgery Tuesday for the torn UCL in his left thumb and expects to miss 6-to-8 weeks, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Alvarez sustained the thumb injury during Friday's game against the Dodgers after stumbling on his turn toward second base. He started the season slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBI over 59 plate appearances. Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will handle the catching duties while Alvarez is sidelined.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Needs surgery for torn UCL in thumb

Alvarez will require surgery after being diagnosed with a torn UCL in his left thumb, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Alvarez suffered the injury during Friday's game versus the Dodgers when he planted his left hand into the ground after stumbling on his turn toward second base. The catcher reportedly told teammates that he expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks, but a clearer timetable for his return could be available following the surgery. With Alvarez on the shelf, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will handle the catching duties for the Mets.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Undergoing MRI on thumb

Alvarez is getting an MRI on his left thumb after leaving Friday's game against the Dodgers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. "I'm pretty concerned. I'm not going to lie," manager Carlos Mendoza said.

Alvarez injured his thumb in the second inning as he planted his left hand into the ground, after stumbling on his turn at second base. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com notes that Alvarez's left thumb "has taken a beating lately," and it sounds like Mendoza is resigned to being without his starting backstop for a stretch given how much pain Alvarez was in. Omar Narvaez is the only other catcher currently on the Mets' 40-man roster, although Tomas Nido is batting .345 (10-for-29) with Triple-A Syracuse.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Lands on IL

The Mets placed Alvarez (thumb) on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Alvarez was removed from Friday's game against the Dodgers after he stumbled on his turn to second base and appeared to jam his left thumb. He received an MRI following Friday's contest, and while Mets manager Carlos Mendoza admitted to Tim Healey of Newsday that he was "pretty concerned," Alvarez seems to have escaped with a sprained left thumb, rather than a break or ligament tear. With Alvarez on the shelf, the Mets selected Tomas Nido from Triple-A Syracuse to serve as the backup to Omar Narvaez. To make room for Nido on the 40-man roster, New York designated Kolton Ingram for assignment Saturday.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Getting more tests on left thumb

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed Saturday that Alvarez is undergoing additional testing on his left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Alvarez was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain after undergoing an MRI following Friday's game against the Dodgers. The initial scan didn't reveal any ligament tear or break, but there is concern that there is more to the sprain, and Mendoza noted that Alvarez is expected to miss more than 10 days with the injury. While Alvarez continues to be evaluated, Omar Narvaez will serve as the Mets' top catcher while Tomas Nido fills in as the backup.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Exits with injured thumb

Alvarez was removed from Friday's game against the Dodgers due to a left thumb injury, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Alvarez stumbled while rounding first base during the top of the second inning and appeared to jam his left thumb while trying to regain his footing. He remained in the game to run the bases and eventually came around to score, but he was replaced behind the dish by Omar Narvaez once the Mets' defense took the field. The 22-year-old backstop will presumably undergo imaging, and the team should offer an update on his status in the near future.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Hot start to season

Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a double in Monday's loss to the Tigers.
