WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Judgment Day beat Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso to reclaim undisputed tag titles

WWE held their season premiere of Raw on Monday night and delivered a show heavy on lengthy matches that gave everyone involved a chance to show their chops. Everything on the show built to a main event for the undisputed WWE tag team titles, with Judgment Day getting their revenge over Jey Uso and Cody Rhodes to regain the titles.

As always, the numbers game was in Judgment Day's favor. Sami Zayn did his best to try and even the odds, but it was the surprise appearance of Jimmy Uso that was the deciding factor in Judgment Day's victory.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

Judgment Day regain undisputed tag titles in main event

Sami Zayn opened the show with a promo expressing his frustration with Kevin Owens being traded to SmackDown. This brought out Judgment Day to say that one thorn had been removed from their collective side with Owens being gone and that they now wanted to remove Zayn as well. The group then surrounded the ring but Jey Uso ran to the ring with a pair of chairs, handing one to Zayn and getting Judgement Day to back down. Zayn later took issue with Uso, saying it shouldn't be Uso having his back, it should be Owens but Owens is gone because Uso came to Raw. Zayn then apologized and the two shared a hug.

Later in the show, Drew McIntyre and Zayn agreed to face each other next week after McIntyre confronted Zayn about automatically forgiving Uso when he arrived on Raw. Zayn was pushed to wanting to fight when McIntyre said Zayn should be glad he hasn't won a world championship because he doesn't understand the pressure that comes with it and is too quick to trust.

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship – Judgment Day (Damian Priest & Finn Balor) def. Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso (c) via pinfall to win the titles when Balor hit Uso with a Coup de Grace. It didn't take long for Dominik Mysterio to make his way to ringside and get involved in the match, helping turn things Judgment Day's way. Mysterio continued to insert himself in the match until Zayn eventually ran to ringside to attack. Priest turned his attention to Zayn, which allowed Rhodes to toss him over the ringside barricade only for Balor to cut off the hot tag. Back in the action, Priest hit Rhodes with a low blow and a Razor's Edge through the commentary desk. Back in the ring, Uso avoided a Coup de Grace from Balor before hitting both Balor and Priest with spears. Jimmy Uso then ran in from the crowd and dropped Jey with a superkick, setting him up for a Coup de Grace and the finish.

This is one of those times you have to just trust that there's a larger reason for the recent booking because Rhodes and Uso winning the belts felt like a big moment only to quickly be rendered meaningless by Judgment Day winning the rematch. Was this because WWE wanted a title change on the season premiere? Because The Bloodline story must always be the focus, even on Raw? Or because it's serving a larger, long-term purpose. No matter what, it's hard as a wrestling fan to be upset with three hours of Raw that had the primary focus of good wrestling matches that were given time to deliver. Grade: B+

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Shinsuke Nakamura def. Ricochet via pinfall in a Falls Count Anywhere match. After several big highspots, Nakamura won by shoving Ricochet off the top rope and through a table at ringside followed by a Kinshasa.
  • Piper Niven def. Natalya via pinfall with a running crossbody. Natalya hit Chelsea Green as Green taunted her after the match, leading to a brief beatdown before Tegan Nox ran in to make the save.
  • Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre came face-to-face to discuss their world heavyweight title match at Crown Jewel. Both men delivered solid points -- including Rollins showing footage of McIntyre hanging out backstage talking to Judgment Day's Rhea Ripley -- before Rollins pointed out that McIntyre always has someone to blame for his losses. At Crown Jewel, however, Rollins said that McIntyre would finally have no one to blame but himself.
  • Ludwig Kaiser def. Johnny Gargano via pinfall. Kaiser was helped by Giovani Vinci at ringside to steal the win.
  • Rhea Ripley def. Shayna Baszler via disqualification after being struck by Zoey Stark. The match broke down when Nia Jax attempted to interfere, which brought out Raquel Rodriguez. Stark then got in the mix before ending up in the ring and striking Ripley. A post-match brawl ensued before Stark was the last woman standing after sending Jax from the ring. Later in the show, Adam Pearce confirmed that Ripley would defend her title against the four other women in a fatal five-way match at Crown Jewel.
  • Intercontinental Championship -- Gunther (c) def. Bronson Reed via pinfall with a powerbomb. As expected, the two big men put on a hard-hitting match before Gunther was able to put together a big flurry and put the match away. After the match, Gunther told the rest of Imperium that he expects Johnny Gargano to be stretchered out of the building after facing Giovanni Vinci next Monday night.
