The White Sox acquired Quero along with left-hander Ky Bush from the Angels on Wednesday in exchange for right-handers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After putting up a .970 OPS in Single-A in 2022, Quero was pushed to Double-A to begin 2023 and is slashing .245/.385/.332 with 35 RBI across 317 plate appearances. The 20-year-old backstop will likely remain in Double-A as he transitions to his new organization, though he remains on his way to contribute in the majors within a few years.... See More ... Angels' Edgar Quero: Treading water at Double-A
Quero has been a league-average hitter (100 wRC+) while slashing .240/.378/.322 with two home runs in 63 games for Double-A Rocket City. Quero has displayed stellar plate skills (16.5 BB%, 17.5 K%) as the third-youngest qualified hitter at Double-A, but he hasn't hit for much impact (0.82 ISO, 23.0 percent hard-contact rate). Quero is set to open the season with Double-A Rocket City, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. This is surprising, even for the aggressive Angels, as Quero, who turns 20 this week, has never played above Single-A and his defense behind the plate is widely panned by scouts. Granted, Rocket City is the team's preferred developmental hub over Tri-City (too pitcher-friendly) and Salt Lake (too hitter-friendly). Quero was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Angels on Tuesday. Quero is one of the organization's better prospects but won't turn 20 until next month and needs more development time. He collected a .965 OPS with 17 homers and 12 steals at Low-A Inland Empire in 2022 and will probably move up to High-A Tri-City to start 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Edgar Quero: Breakout season in Single-A
Quero wrapped the 2022 regular season at High-A Inland Empire with a .312/.435/.530 batting line, 17 homers and 12 steals through 111 games. There are few -- if any -- flaws to be found in Quero's stat line this season. He led the 66ers in average, homers, RBI (75) and runs (86), and he did so while putting up a terrific 73:91 BB:K. To highlight just how special this season was for the 19-year-old Quero, when J.T. Realmuto was his age, he hit .175 in rookie ball. Switch-hitting catchers with both power and speed -- not to mention the polish to put up a .965 OPS in full-season ball at 19 -- pretty much don't exist, so while Quero has gotten shockingly little hype in dynasty circles thus far, he won't fly under the radar for long.
