Player Outlook
The 27-year-old held a small edge in playing time over Jacob Stalling behind the plate for Miami last season, and Stallings has since been let go. Nick Fortes ended up playing in 108 games and had a .204/.263/.299 slash line, which is a sharp drop from the .696 OPS he posted in 2022. He still provided a strong presence behind the plate, which should give him a strong chance at sticking with the big club for 2024. Fortes was never a major offensive threat during his minor-league career, so he seems unlikely to break out and become a solid option for fantasy managers. Christian Bethancourt was acquired in December and is a likely bet to split catching work.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Idle Sunday

Fortes isn't in the Marlins' lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. With Fortes owning just a .422 OPS on the season, the Marlins will opt to start Ali Sanchez on Sunday in an effort to find any sort of offensive production from behind the plate.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Fortes is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals. Fortes has started 11 of Miami's first 14 games in June despite going 3-for-31 during that stretch, but he'll take a seat for Tuesday's contest. Christian Bethancourt will work behind the plate and bat ninth in his place.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Sharing work with Bethancourt

Fortes will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Nationals. Fortes appeared to be taking control of the Marlins' No. 1 catching job earlier this month, but he's fallen back into more of a timeshare with Christian Bethancourt of late, with both backstops having now made two starts apiece over the last four contests. The downturn in playing time comes while Fortes has turned in a .120/.154/.120 slash line through 10 games in June.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Swats second homer

Fortes went 2-for-3 with a walk, a three-run home run and two additional runs scored in Friday's 8-0 romp over the Mets. The catcher turned on a Christian Scott sweeper up in the zone and drove it over the wall in left-center field to cap a four-run second inning for the Marlins. It was only Fortes' second homer of the season, and while he tied his career high by reaching base four times in the victory, his .159/.198/.256 slash line on the season keeps him far from fantasy consideration. It's his work behind the plate that's kept him in the lineup -- Miami's produced three straight shutouts, and Fortes has caught all of them.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Sitting again Monday

Fortes is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers. Fortes will sit for the second day in a row and the third time in four games while Christian Bethancourt gets another turn behind the plate. The Marlins have gotten minimal production from both of their catchers for most of the season, but Bethancourt has shown some semblance of life at the dish of late, going 6-for-13 with two doubles over his last four games. That may be enough to give him the edge on playing time for now over Fortes, who has turned in a .345 OPS over 78 plate appearances on the season.

Fortes is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Philadelphia, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Fortes will cede backstop duties to Christian Bethancourt. In May, Fortes is batting 2-for-14 (.143) with a solo home run.

Fortes isn't in the Marlins' lineup for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs. • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Sitting out Wednesday

Fortes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The Marlins and Giants have an afternoon game following a Tuesday night tilt, so Fortes will get a breather. Jhonny Pereda will make his first major-league start, handling the catching duties while Trevor Rogers is on the bump. Fortes has mustered a .305 OPS through 35 plate appearances this season but is still expected to see the bulk of the starts behind the plate while Christian Bethancourt (illness) is on the injured list.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Heads to bench Thursday

Fortes is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cardinals. The Marlins continue to embrace a timeshare behind the plate, as Fortes and Christian Bethancourt have now made four starts apiece at catcher through Miami's first eight games. One of the two catchers may separate himself from the other from a performance standpoint and eventually emerge as the clear No. 1 option, but Fortes hasn't done much to distinguish himself thus far. Through his first four starts, Fortes has gone 1-for-12 with a double and also reached base when he was hit by a pitch.

Fortes is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The Marlins have embraced a timeshare behind the plate so far this season, with Fortes making two starts to Christian Bethancourt's three. Fortes is off to an 0-for-6 start at the dish and will likely need to pick up the pace offensively if hopes to capture a larger share of the work at catcher.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Working on swing adjustments

Fortes worked on changes to his stance and swing this offseason, and Marlins manager Skip Schumaker is expecting more offense from him this season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. It would be hard for Fortes' offense to get worse in 2024 after he stumbled to a .562 OPS through 323 plate appearances last year, a significant decline from the .696 OPS he posted in 2022. The Marlins like his work with the pitching staff, however, and offseason addition Christian Bethancourt has a career .622 OPS in the majors, so the starting job behind the plate likely still belongs to Fortes.
