  • Sean McKeon: Finds work in Indy

The Colts signed McKeon to their practice squad Thursday.

McKeon failed to catch on with the Lions before signing with the Colts' practice squad Thursday. He appeared in nine regular-season games with the Cowboys last season, failing to haul in either of his two targets while playing 234 total snaps (94 offensive and 140 on special teams).

  • Sean McKeon: Let go by Lions

McKeon was released by Detroit on Tuesday.

McKeon played in nine regular-season games for the Cowboys last year but ended the campaign on IR due to an ankle injury. He signed a contract with the Lions in May and caught both his targets for 19 yards during the exhibition slate, but he didn't make the cut for the 53-man roster. Sam LaPorta (hamstring), Brock Wright and Parker Hesse will serve as Detroit's tight ends to open the campaign.

  • Lions' Sean McKeon: Inks in Detroit

The Lions signed McKeon to a contract Thursday.

McKeon suffered an ankle injury last December and was placed on IR after suiting up for nine games with the Cowboys, in which span he failed to secure either of his two targets. He can contribute both on special teams and as a blocker on offense, and McKeon, who's presumably past his ankle issue, now gets a chance to compete for a depth role with Detroit.

  • Cowboys' Sean McKeon: Hits IR with ankle issue

The Cowboys will place McKeon on injured reserve Wednesday with an ankle injury, Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

McKeon had suited up in each of the Cowboys' previous nine games, drawing two catchless targets across 94 snaps on offense while also contributing on the team's special-teams units. Though the 25-year-old wasn't reported to be dealing with an injury coming out of this past Thursday's win over the Seahawks, he'll now miss at least four games after landing on IR. The Cowboys activated fellow tight end Peyton Hendershot (ankle) from IR in a corresponding move.

  • Cowboys' Sean McKeon: Joins Dallas roster

The Cowboys signed McKeon to their 53-man active roster Thursday.

McKeon's promotion to the practice squad comes in response to fellow tight end Peyton Hendershot (ankle) being placed on injured reserve Thursday. The 25-year-old was already elevated for two games this season, playing 23 total snaps on offense and 30 on special teams. For the duration of his stay on the roster, McKeon will likely serve as the Cowboys' No. 3 tight end behind Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker.

  • Sean McKeon: Reverts to practice squad

McKeon reverted to the Cowboys' practice squad Monday.

McKeon saw six snaps on offense and 17 on special teams and even managed to log a tackle following one of Dak Prescott's interceptions. If Peyton Hendershot (ankle) ends up being out again next week against the Chargers, McKeon could be in line to be to play for the third straight week.

  • Cowboys' Sean McKeon: Elevated for Week 5

The Cowboys elevated McKeon from their practice squad Saturday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

McKeon was elevated for the first time last week to face New England, and he ended up logging 17 snaps on offense and 13 on special teams without registering any stats. The tight end should serve as depth for Dallas against San Francisco on Sunday, with Peyton Hendershot ruled out due to an ankle injury.

  • Sean McKeon: Back to practice squad

McKeon reverted to the Cowboys' practice squad Monday.

Mckeon played 18 of 70 offensive snaps Sunday against the Patriots while filling in for Peyton Hendershot (ankle). McKeon could return to the active roster in Week 5 against the 49ers if Hendershot is unable to suit up.

  • Cowboys' Sean McKeon: Promoted to active roster

The Cowboys elevated McKeon to the active roster Saturday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

McKeon was signed to the Cowboys' practice squad Aug. 31 after being cut by the team two days earlier ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. He could be active for Sunday's contest against the Patriots if tight end Peyton Hendershot (ankle) is ruled out.

  • Sean McKeon: Earns practice squad spot

The Cowboys signed McKeon to the practice squad Wednesday, Patrik Walker of the team's official site reports.

McKeon was a somewhat surprising cut as Dallas trimmed down to a 53-man roster, but he will at least stick around via the practice squad. He secured two of three targets for 11 yards in 13 games with the Cowboys last season.

  • Sean McKeon: Cut by Dallas

The Cowboys waived McKeon on Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

McKeon appeared in 13 games for Dallas last year, securing two of three targets for 11 yards. The 2020 undrafted tight end out of Michigan played in 36 contests over the past three years, so it's surprising to see him cut, especially given Dalton Schultz left this offseason and John Stephens tore his ACL during training camp. Gehlken notes that Dallas hopes to sign McKeon to a practice-squad deal if he clears waivers.

  • Cowboys' Sean McKeon: Roster odds improving

McKeon's chances of making the 53-man roster increased greatly with John Stephens having suffered a season-ending ACL tear Saturday, Nick Eatman of the Cowboys' website reports.

Stephens, an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana, was having an impressive camp and was pushing McKeon for the No. 4 spot on the depth chart at tight end. The rookie's injury doesn't guarantee McKeon a roster spot, as Dallas could elect to go with only three TEs to begin the year, but in all likelihood his job is secure. The 25-year-old has only six catches in 22 games over the last two seasons and would have a minimal receiving role behind Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker and Peyton Hendershot.
